“A Little More Considerate”: The Apothecary Diaries Star Criticizes the Way Jinshi Treats Maomao

I recently watched the final episode of Season 2 of “The Apothecary Diaries,” which wrapped up the struggle against the Shi Clan and revealed Loulan’s true intentions. Over two cours, the series delved into the tumultuous relationship between Maomao and Jinshi while they faced challenges from one of the nation’s most influential clans. The upcoming sequel has been confirmed to be in development, but details are scarce at this point. The finale saw significant shifts in the narrative, particularly with Jinshi revealing his true identity as a eunuch and Maomao parting ways with the Rear Palace. Now, she works as an apothecary at the Verdigris House, taking over from her adoptive father Loumen who has returned to work at the Rear Palace once more.

Even though the two characters are apart, the teaser for the sequel shows that Jinshi will still rely on Maomao to solve the puzzles and mysteries surrounding him. This relationship started because of her exceptional intellect, and she’s assisted him multiple times since then. Along this journey, Jinshi has developed feelings for Maomao, but she tries to keep her distance due to the fact that he’s not a typical eunuch. Fans enjoy their dynamic in “The Apothecary Diaries,” but the actor playing Jinshi has one minor critique about his character.

Jinshi’s Voice Actor Shares His Thoughts on the Character

At Universal Studios Japan, located in Osaka, a joint venture named “The Apothecary Diaries” was staged to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Universal Cool Japan series. This interactive experience started on July 1st, 2025, and runs until January 4th, 2026. During this period, guests receive an investigation form to search for hidden clues alongside a character named Maomao. Actors are employed to portray Maomao and Jinshi within the park, with one of the performers making a special appearance at the event as well.

As reported by Mantan Web, Jinshi’s voice actor, Takae Otsuka, expressed his experience at the theme park. He stated, “Initially, I wasn’t certain about what was to unfold, but we ventured to different spots within the park and uncovered hidden clues, which turned out to be quite enjoyable!

Otsuka playfully suggests that Jinshi might want to take on some investigations himself instead of always relying on Maomao. By doing so, he could better understand and appreciate her efforts, he jokes with a laugh. It was truly a fun experience for both of them, working together to solve the mystery. Whether or not they succeed, I hope you enjoy following the clues that Maomao provides!

In a position of esteem, Jinshi finds himself bound by numerous limitations, preventing him from engaging in lower-level inquiries, deemed as less prestigious work. However, Jinshi’s unwavering faith in Maomao’s intelligence and integrity is undeniable, leading him to never question her capabilities when delegating challenging assignments. Although he cannot actively intervene, Jinshi stands ready to aid Maomao covertly by skillfully leveraging his courtly influence from behind the scenes.
