A classic Tomb Raider game is now available on both Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2. The Tomb Raider series is one of the most enduring in video game history, staying popular for decades and evolving with many different spin-off and main games. While the last major installment, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, came out seven years ago, a new Lara Croft adventure is planned, though its release date is still unknown.
The series has stayed popular because it’s always evolving. In 2013, a new Tomb Raider game came out on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. This version offered a darker, more realistic origin story for Lara Croft, showing how she first became an adventurer. While some found the game too violent or uncomfortable for its portrayal of women, it ultimately proved popular and launched a trilogy of games detailing Croft’s development into a skilled explorer. Now, players can enjoy the game on a new platform.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Is Now Available on Nintendo Switch 2
Fans were surprised to find Tomb Raider unexpectedly released on both Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2, only a month after Tomb Raider Anniversary came out. Each console has its own version of the game, meaning the Switch 2 version will fully utilize the console’s enhanced power. This updated version, called Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, costs $19.99, though it’s currently available for $18. It’s not a huge price cut, but any discount is welcome! The game was brought to the Nintendo Switch family of consoles by Aspyr Media, who are well-known for updating and releasing classic Star Wars games on modern systems.
This Nintendo Switch release is based on the remastered version of Tomb Raider originally available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and includes all previously released downloadable content and bonus items. It’s currently unknown if the multiplayer mode will be included. While the original game’s servers are still active, the multiplayer mode isn’t very popular, so Aspyr Media might choose to leave it out of this version.
It’s currently unknown if Aspyr will release Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Switch. However, if this first game performs well, it seems likely they’ll bring future Tomb Raider titles to the Nintendo Switch 2. Regardless, this is a fantastic opportunity for new players to experience a classic Tomb Raider adventure and a good way to prepare for the next installment in the series.
