Wicked Returns with Surprise Live Special Before For Good Hits Theaters

There’s no other place quite like Universal’s home network. Actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are set to star in a unique live performance of Wicked, which will air on NBC on Thursday, November 6th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The two-hour Wicked special will be available for streaming on Peacock starting November 7th, a fortnight before the new movie Wicked: For Good hits cinemas on November 21st.

At the NBCU Upfront event in May, it was first revealed that NBC’s “Wicked” special will feature Erivo and Grande alongside their fellow cast members and unexpected guests, who will perform selections from the 2024 version of “Wicked”, with a possible sneak peek at numbers from the upcoming production titled “Wicked: For Good“. This is based on information provided in a press statement.

2024’s “Wicked” will feature Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, the green-skinned witch, alongside Ariana Grande portraying Galinda/Glinda, the most popular student at Shiz University. In this production, Jonathan Bailey takes on the role of Prince Fiyero from Winkie Country, Ethan Slater plays Munchkin Boq, Peter Dinklage lends his voice to Dr. Dillamond, a goat professor, Michelle Yeoh portrays Madame Morrible, the Dean of Sorcery Studies at Shiz U, and Jeff Goldblum brings the Wonderful Wizard of Oz to life.

Jon M. Chu’s movie version of the 2003 Tony Award-winning musical, which was itself based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” earned over $750 million at the global box office when it premiered in November, making it the highest-grossing adaptation of a Broadway musical in history. Subsequently, the film became Universal’s biggest Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) title and Peacock’s most successful Pay 1 streaming debut to date.

Ben Winston, a multi-talented Emmy Award winner known for producing the Grammy Awards and “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” is taking on the role of executive producer for Fulwell Entertainment’s project titled “An Evening with Elton John and Brandi Carlile.” Similarly, Raj Kapoor, who has worked on events like the Oscars and “An Evening with Dua Lipa,” is also serving as executive producer for this upcoming production.

Upon arriving at Peacock, the “Wicked” special will be added to a collection of content that includes a karaoke version of the movie, the “Making Wicked” documentary special, the musical-centric “Wicked: The Real Story”, the “Wicked: On Set with Jon Chu” docu-mini special, and “Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked”, a 42-minute behind-the-scenes special commemorating the initial part of Chu’s two-part movie adaptation.

In the musical “Wicked: For Good,” Elphaba (Erivo), once infamously known as The Wicked Witch of the West, resides in seclusion within the Ozian forest, secretly pursuing her quest for animal liberation and unveiling the truth about the Wizard (Goldblum). On the other hand, Glinda flourishes as a beacon of goodness, dwelling at the Emerald City palace and basking in the luxuries of fame and adoration. Guided by Madame Morrible (Yeoh), Glinda is dispatched to spread tranquility across Oz, insisting that everything remains peaceful under The Wizard’s reign.

As Glinda’s fame grows and her wedding with Prince Fiyero Tigelaar (Bailey) approaches, she is plagued by memories of her time apart from Elphaba. The Kind Witch endeavors to reconcile Elphaba and the Wizard, but these attempts will ultimately fall short, pushing Glinda and Elphaba even further away. This tension will have far-reaching consequences, altering Boq (Slater) and Fiyero for good and endangering Nessarose’s (Marissa Bode) safety when a girl from Kansas suddenly enters their lives.

In the face of an escalating uprising against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba must unite once more for a climactic showdown. With their unique bond serving as the pivotal point of their destinies, they must look at each other with genuine understanding and openness if they are to transform themselves and Oz for the better. Wicked 2 hits theaters on November 21.
