Ubisoft is a leading video game company known for popular franchises. For 25 years, one of their strategy game series has been a standout title on PCs, blending city-building, economic management, and storytelling. Though always popular with dedicated fans, the newest game in the series is a massive success – Ubisoft reports it’s had the biggest launch in the franchise’s history, breaking previous records and redefining what success means for this long-running strategy series.
Ubisoft has announced that Anno 117: Pax Romana has had a record-breaking launch, becoming the fastest-selling game in the series’ 25-year history. While Ubisoft hasn’t revealed exact sales figures, the game performed exceptionally well, reaching number two on Steam’s global best-seller list at launch – even outselling Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. It also ranked among the top three best-selling games in Germany, France, the UK, and the US. Anno 117: Pax Romana is also the highest-rated game in the Anno series, achieving an average score of 85 on Metacritic and a remarkable 94 on OpenCritic.
As a longtime fan, this new release feels amazing – like everything finally clicked! And honestly, if you’re new to the series, now is the time to start playing. It looks like Ubisoft’s big risk of switching to ancient Rome really paid off. Anno 117: Pax Romana drops you right into the heart of the Roman Empire, and it’s awesome. There are so many cool things to do – building up your cities, creating huge trade routes, negotiating with other players, and just generally becoming a Roman power player.
Although exact sales numbers haven’t been released, Ubisoft seems optimistic that the new game will keep performing well. They’ve highlighted that this is just the start, with plans for ongoing support, updates, and expansions. Stéphane Jankowski, Executive Producer of Anno 117: Pax Romana, shared this positive outlook, mirroring the excitement of fans.
We’re excited to announce a new era for our game, ‘Anno 117: Pax Romana,’ thanks to the dedication of our team and the amazing support from our players! We’ve been listening to your feedback and are committed to delivering exciting new content, starting with the addition of Egypt as a playable province in the first year.
The gaming world is changing in exciting ways, and we’re seeing some surprising trends. It used to be unusual for strategy games to become more popular than major first-person shooters, and indie games rarely dominated award shows. Now, developers are taking chances, and those risks are paying off. We’re seeing the rise of completely new game types, inspired by hits like Vampire Survivors, and older, less popular genres are making a big comeback.
