Batman/Deadpool #1 is the Gold Standard of DC/Marvel Crossovers

The second part of the Batman and Deadpool team-up is here, and it’s even better than the first! Just two months ago, the unlikely pair collided in Deadpool/Batman, the first Marvel and DC crossover in twenty years. While that comic was a blast, this follow-up, Batman/Deadpool, really takes things to the next level. Packed with references to comic book history, funny self-aware jokes, and plenty of team-ups, this crossover delivers on all fronts.

The team-up of Batman and Deadpool brings together top creators like Grant Morrison and Dan Mora for the main story, and features a host of other talented artists and writers. This special anthology includes charming shorter stories by creators such as Tom Taylor, Scott Snyder, and Mariko Tamaki, enhancing the overall sense of fun. Marvel and DC raised expectations with this crossover, and Deadpool/Batman definitely delivers, exceeding them with its imaginative and enjoyable approach.

PROS CONS
Comedic fourth wall-breaking Backups are a little short
Plenty of variety for fans New readers might miss deeper references

DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1 is a Hilarious, Metafictional Masterpiece

The main story, “The Cosmic Kiss Caper,” immediately throws you into the excitement. Batman quickly goes from hunting a powerful artifact that can change reality to battling cartoon-style ninjas alongside someone who seems suspiciously like Deathstroke. Amidst the confusion, Batman and Deadpool realize the mastermind behind everything is Cassandra Nova. She’s been manipulating Bruce Wayne to find the Quantum Keyboard, a cosmic item used by a villain that fans of 1990s comics will recognize as Grant Morrison – the author himself makes another appearance within the story’s universe!

Beyond the main story, Deadpool/Batman includes four more team-ups between popular heroes from Marvel and DC. These shorter stories offer a variety of tones and pairings: Constantine teams up with Doctor Strange when magical realms clash, Nightwing and X-23 talk about the pressures of living up to family names, Hulk and Harley Quinn share a lighthearted adventure involving hot dogs, and Ms. Marvel and Static begin a sweet new friendship. While each story is different, they’re all enjoyable.

DC and Marvel’s Latest Crossover is an Amazing Tribute to the Big Two

As a big fan of Grant Morrison, I really loved the main story. It’s clear Morrison and artist Mikel Janín put a ton of creativity and effort into it. The story is filled with clever comic book nods, fun breaks from the traditional format, and great character development – something I felt was missing in the previous Deadpool and Batman team-up. They didn’t just go through the motions here, and knowing both creators are incredibly talented, I was completely captivated by Batman and Deadpool’s adventure.

I really like Morrison’s work, but I also enjoyed the backup stories. The creative teams behind them were all excellent – Hayden Sherman did a great job with Strange and Constantine, and G. Willow Wilson created a compelling link between Static and Ms. Marvel. Each story had a lot of potential, but strangely, having so many good ideas actually worked against them. We only got brief glimpses of things like a possible Ghost Rider versus Swamp Thing battle, and I really wanted to see more development and exploration of those concepts!

Overall, this book delivers exactly what I hoped for when Marvel and DC announced their team-up. It would have been simple to just throw characters together, but the creative team – Morrison, Mora, and everyone else involved – did so much more. There’s a clear respect for the characters, the traditions of superhero comics, and the fun of crossovers, and each story feels like a heartfelt tribute. While the stories are all unique, they share a common emotional core.

Okay, comic fans, don’t worry – the universe-colliding crossovers aren’t stopping here! We’ve already got Superman and Spider-Man on the horizon for next year, which is fantastic. But honestly, the creative team behind Batman/Deadpool #1 has set the bar incredibly high. This book isn’t just funny – it’s a brilliantly self-aware love letter to decades of DC and Marvel history. I truly believe this one will be remembered as one of the all-time greatest superhero team-ups in comic book form, no question about it.
