Ricky Gervais’s latest Netflix stand-up special gets release date confirmed – and it’s very soon

Netflix has confirmed the release date for Ricky Gervais’s next stand-up special.

Gervais’s new stand-up special, Mortality, is coming to Netflix on December 30th. It’s his fourth special and is being billed as his most honest and best show yet.

Comedian and Emmy and Golden Globe winner will be sharing a special, filmed at the London Palladium, that takes a funny and honest look at life, death, and what’s happening in the world. He’ll be reflecting on his own mortality with a darkly humorous perspective.

Gervais has often dealt with the theme of death in his work, most notably in his Netflix series After Life, which centers on a man grieving his wife’s passing.

As a huge fan of Ricky Gervais, I’m really excited that his ‘Mortality’ tour is wrapping up this December after playing 80 arenas around the world! What’s even better is that a portion of the money from ticket sales is going to charity. I’ve heard it’s been a massive success, breaking box office records in so many places across Europe – it’s fantastic to see such a popular show also giving back.

I’ve been a huge fan of Ricky Gervais for years, and it’s amazing to see how successful he’s become! He really hit a new level with his ‘Mortality’ show, but it’s been incredible watching his evolution through all his specials like ‘Humanity,’ ‘SuperNature,’ and ‘Armageddon’ – he’s truly one of the biggest comedians out there now.

Dave Chappelle’s 2022 show, SuperNature, sparked controversy due to jokes some considered anti-transgender. The comedian later clarified that his jokes weren’t aimed at transgender people themselves, but rather at what he described as ‘trans activist ideology.’

Gervais’s 2023 special, Armageddon, received criticism for including a hurtful and offensive term related to disability. He later dismissed the criticism as exaggerated or insincere outrage.

Gervais has often explained his sometimes shocking comedy, stating in an interview that he believes he can defend any controversial subject matter he brings up.

I carefully consider my words and understand they have an impact, so I don’t just speak without thinking, he explained.

I’m always driven by principle. I need to be able to look at any decision I make and honestly say to myself, ‘This makes sense, and here’s why it’s the right thing to do.’ It’s just how I operate – I have to be able to justify my actions to myself, always.

Gervais explained that his comedy often appears more shocking than it is because it tackles sensitive topics. He believes that when you actually examine the jokes themselves, they’re not that bad – it’s the controversial subjects and potentially offensive language that get a reaction from people.
