It’s disappointing that a major unanswered question from the 2021 Marvel movie Eternals might remain unresolved, even after four years. Eternals was a bold experiment for Marvel Studios during Phase 4, introducing exciting new ideas and characters. While the film, directed by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, has gained appreciation since its release, its initial poor reception suggests we may not get answers to its biggest mysteries.
A common criticism of the movie Eternals was that it introduced too many characters – all ten members of the Eternal team, plus the powerful Celestials – without giving enough screen time to develop any of them fully. While Celestials had been hinted at in previous Marvel movies, Eternals was our first real introduction to them, including Arishem the Judge, the being who created the Eternals and spoke with Sersi. Many fans are now concerned that a key plot point – Arishem’s promise to return and judge Earth after the Celestial Tiamut was killed – might never be addressed in future films.
When Could Arishem’s Promise Be Paid Off in the MCU?

A sequel to Eternals seems like the most logical place for Arishem to fulfill his promise to judge humanity. While the first movie received a mixed reaction in 2021, opinions have shifted, and many fans are now eager to see the Eternals return in a stronger follow-up. However, Marvel Studios might be hesitant to revisit Eternals, as it was the first major MCU film to receive largely negative feedback. Although rumors and hints from those involved have circulated for a while, there are currently no concrete plans for Eternals 2, leaving the characters’ future within the MCU unclear.
Even if Arishem the Judge and the other Celestials aren’t in a sequel to Eternals, they could reappear in future Marvel cosmic projects. While several films like Thor 5, Doctor Strange 3, and Captain Marvel 3 are possibilities, it’s probably unlikely given those heroes already have established storylines. After the Multiverse Saga concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel plans to focus on mutants and the X-Men, which could still create an opportunity for Arishem to return.
Marvel Studios might be planning to adapt the 2022 comic storyline A.X.E.: Judgment Day for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This story involved a major conflict between the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals, triggered by the discovery of how mutants can be resurrected and the Eternals learning the truth about their mission. A Judgment Day crossover event could work really well in the MCU, focusing on Arishem’s evaluation of humanity. This could happen in Phase 7 or later, giving the Eternals a more significant role in the future and finally resolving the biggest unanswered question from the Eternals movie.
