Paramount has seen a lot of changes recently, especially with the new merger with Skydance. These changes are affecting different parts of the company and its projects, including Sylvester Stallone’s popular series on Paramount+. The show has already evolved since its first season, but this latest change could be the most significant one yet.
So, I was reading Variety, and it sounds like things are getting a little messy behind the scenes on Tulsa King. Apparently, there’s been a change with who’s running the show, but it’s not as simple as just a new showrunner. It seems Scott Stone from 101 Studios is basically calling the shots now, but a former stunt coordinator, Freddie Poole, is saying he’s not officially the showrunner. It’s all a bit confusing, honestly!
Garrett Poole, an Emmy nominee for his work on Tulsa King, explained that he spoke with Scott Stone between seasons 3 and 4 about who would lead the show creatively during season 4. He wasn’t happy with the response. According to Poole, Stone told him there wouldn’t be a showrunner – that the studio, 101, would be making the key decisions. Poole said this immediately concerned him and made him realize he needed to protect his own interests.
Just days before filming began for season four, the show unexpectedly laid off 26 crew members, including Poole. The cuts impacted several departments, such as sound, stunts, transportation, and hair. Some of those affected discovered they had been let go when they received a job posting for their own positions.
Poole described the situation as unprofessional and avoidable. He explained that some crew members were asked to leave their gear after the third season, only to be informed a week before filming began that they wouldn’t be rehired. He felt this was particularly discouraging for those affected.
This isn’t the first time the series has seen changes in leadership. The show has had several showrunners over its run. Terence Winter led the first season, but left before the second. Season 2 didn’t have a designated showrunner, although Craig Zisk largely took on those responsibilities.
So, things shifted a bit behind the scenes in Season 3 when Dave Erickson took over as showrunner. From what I’ve heard, he and Sylvester Stallone didn’t quite share the same vision for the show, which apparently caused some friction on set. Stallone really wanted Nic Winter back involved, and he is returning – thankfully! – but as a head writer and executive producer, not as the person running things day-to-day. That responsibility is mostly falling to 101 Studios and Stone this time around, which is a pretty big change.
Tulsa King season 4 currently doesn’t have a release date.
