A Bizarre Sci-Fi Comedy Just Hit Tubi (And Its Sequel May Have Killed Hope for a Third Movie)

If you’re in the mood for a really fun movie, check out Tubi! They’re now streaming a hilarious and over-the-top sci-fi comedy. These movies are known for being silly, mixing futuristic ideas with everyday humor. And just in time, the original film is available alongside its less-successful follow-up, effectively ending any plans for another sequel.

The movies Hot Tub Time Machine and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 are now available on Tubi, having started streaming on November 1st. Both films were directed by Steve Pink. The first movie follows four friends – played by John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke – who find themselves transported back to 1986 after using a hot tub at a ski resort. This gives them a chance to revisit their past and potentially alter their futures. In the sequel, most of the group takes another trip in the hot tub, but this time they end up in the future.

Hot Tub Time Machine Is a Classic, but Its Sequel Failed

Hot Tub Time Machine was a surprisingly brilliant idea for a sci-fi comedy. While it received mixed reactions initially – earning a 64% score from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s since become a beloved cult classic. The movie lives up to its silly premise with surprisingly effective humor. Instead of getting caught up in the complexities of time travel, it focuses on the funny results, creating a lot of memorable moments and characters.

The first Hot Tub Time Machine movie was successful, but the sequel didn’t fare nearly as well. It was a box office failure and received overwhelmingly negative reviews from both critics (14% approval) and audiences (26%). Beyond the noticeable absence of John Cusack, which significantly hurt the film, the sequel suffered from a weak and uninspired script that felt thrown together and often relied on offensive humor instead of genuine comedy.

The movie Hot Tub Time Machine 2 effectively ended the series, making a third film seem unlikely. Despite Rob Corddry stating that Hot Tub Time Machine 3 is prepared to be made, he explained to CBR that it would require a significant stroke of luck for the project to move forward.

What’s New on Tubi?

Tubi is adding a lot of new movies this November! For laughs, you can stream comedies like Hot Tub Time Machine, Daddy’s Home, and Maid in Manhattan. If you’re into sci-fi, check out Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Super 8. Other films now available include classics like No Country for Old Men, Face/Off, and Titanic.
