That Tomatometer score – just a simple ‘Fresh’ or ‘Rotten’ – is brilliant. With so many streaming services now, it’s amazing to have something that quickly tells you what the critics think. Honestly, if a show has a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, I’m much more likely to give it a try – it really shapes what I end up watching.

Rotten Tomatoes’ simple ‘fresh’ or ‘rotten’ scoring system doesn’t differentiate between good and excellent shows. Many fantasy series have therefore earned a perfect 100% score, even if they aren’t truly exceptional. To identify the very best fantasy shows, we used a different approach. We focused specifically on fantasy, excluding shows with strong science fiction or horror elements, as well as superhero content – all categories Rotten Tomatoes itself defines separately. We then ranked the 100% rated series by the number of reviews, because it’s harder to maintain a perfect score with more critics weighing in. Interestingly, this method revealed that the highest-ranked fantasy shows are all animated, highlighting animation’s ability to create immersive and imaginative worlds.
