Obi-Wan Kenobi instantly became a legendary figure when he first appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope. Though the story primarily focuses on Anakin Skywalker and his fall to Darth Vader, a deeper look reveals Obi-Wan consistently surpassed his peers, even Yoda, accomplishing incredible feats unmatched by most Jedi. Throughout the films, books, and shows, moments highlight not only Obi-Wan’s skill, but also his deep spirituality and brilliant strategic mind, solidifying his place as the most powerful and influential Jedi Master in the Order’s history.
Obi-Wan isn’t the strongest Jedi because of brute force, but because of his incredible self-control – a level of mastery that sets him apart from all others.
8) He Learned How to Transcend Death (& Taught Anakin on His Deathbed)

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Jedi who could become Force ghosts. Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the first in the newer generation of Jedi to really figure out how to keep his consciousness alive after death. It wasn’t easy, though – it took a natural connection to the Cosmic Force, something his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, pioneered. Honestly, becoming a Force ghost seems like the ultimate power in the Star Wars galaxy – it’s about moving beyond your physical body and achieving a kind of immortality. It’s just… incredible to think about.
As a huge Star Wars fan, one of the most powerful moments for me is seeing Obi-Wan help Anakin find peace at the very end. It’s not just about Anakin turning back to the light side, but Obi-Wan actually guiding him to remember who he was, to hold onto his true self. It really hits home how incredible Obi-Wan was as a teacher and how deeply he understood the Force. Even in that final, heartbreaking scene, his influence saved the Chosen One, and that impact clearly lasted beyond death, shaping the most powerful Jedi ever.
7) He Overwhelmed Darth Vader After Years of Being Disconnected From the Force

The Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi is set ten years after Revenge of the Sith, revealing that Obi-Wan had withdrawn from the Force while living in hiding on Tatooine. He secretly watches over a young Luke Skywalker, but is burdened by painful memories and feels lost and defeated.
Darth Vader spent ten years growing stronger, driven by anger and the dark side of the Force. When he and his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, meet again after their battle on Mustafar, Kenobi, though recently recovered, easily defeats Vader. This shows that Kenobi’s connection to the Force is so profound that it’s more powerful than Vader’s brute strength.
6) He Defeated Anakin on Mustafar

The battle on Mustafar is a standout fight in the entire Star Wars saga, and it really showcases Obi-Wan’s skill. He was forced to fight Anakin, someone he considered a brother, who was also incredibly powerful with the Force – perhaps the most powerful ever. Having just turned to the dark side, Anakin was at the height of his abilities, making him a truly frightening opponent.
Let’s talk about that duel on Mustafar. Obi-Wan didn’t win because he was flashy, but because he’s a master of defense – that Soresu style really paid off. He just waited for Anakin to make a mistake, and Anakin, blinded by his own ego, completely disregarded the obvious advantage of the high ground. It’s honestly remarkable when you think about it; Obi-Wan was the only one who could have stopped Anakin at that point, and he walked away from it! That really speaks to his skill, his discipline, and just how carefully he fought that battle.
5) He Matched Anakin’s Force Power

The fight on Mustafar changed from a lightsaber duel to a battle of Force powers. Obi-Wan and Anakin began to push against each other with the Force. Despite Anakin having more midi-chlorians than any Jedi before him – even Yoda – Obi-Wan was able to not only keep up, but ultimately win.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been amazed by the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin. It really hit home that being strong with the Force isn’t just about having a high midichlorian count or being physically powerful. Obi-Wan proving he could match Anakin’s raw power showed me it’s about something deeper – control, discipline, and staying true to the light side. Honestly, thinking about it, how many Jedi throughout history could have actually gone toe-to-toe with Anakin in a test of pure will? Very few, if any, I think!
4) He Defeated General Grievous

General Grievous was a cyborg specifically designed to hunt and kill Jedi. While he lost to several Jedi in older stories, his defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith is particularly important. Throughout The Clone Wars animated series, Mace Windu repeatedly tried to capture or defeat Grievous, but usually failed.
Obi-Wan managed to find and defeat General Grievous, a formidable opponent who had previously withstood attacks from multiple Jedi at once. The battle unfolded in two stages: a lightsaber fight, followed by Obi-Wan cleverly using Grievous’ vulnerability to win—something even powerful Jedi Masters like Mace Windu hadn’t been able to do.
3) Mace Windu Considered Him the Best of the Best

According to the official novelization of Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover, Mace Windu—one of the most powerful Jedi Masters—secretly recognizes Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Jedi Order’s most skilled warrior. Windu observes that Obi-Wan’s mastery of the Soresu lightsaber technique—focused on defense—makes him incredibly difficult to defeat.
Mace Windu’s opinion highlights Obi-Wan as a particularly skilled Jedi. Windu admired Obi-Wan’s perfect defense and control, preferring it to more aggressive fighting styles. This acknowledgement from such a powerful Jedi Master like Windu demonstrates that Obi-Wan truly represents the best qualities of the Jedi Order.
2) He Defeated Darth Maul While a Padawan

When Obi-Wan Kenobi was still a Padawan learner, he achieved an amazing victory against Darth Maul, a powerful Sith Lord known for his skill with a double-bladed lightsaber. This win was particularly impressive because Obi-Wan was unarmed, separated from his teacher, and Maul actually had the advantage of higher ground during the fight.
With amazing courage, skill, and trust in the Force, Obi-Wan somersaulted over Darth Maul and used Maul’s own lightsaber to defeat him. This act avenged the death of Qui-Gon Jinn and marked the defeat of a powerful Sith Lord, who many believed were just legends. This victory demonstrated that Obi-Wan was an exceptionally gifted Jedi, even before he achieved the rank of Master.
1) He is the First to Sense Palpatine’s Disingenuity

During the discussions about the unsettling feeling Qui-Gon Jinn had during the Naboo negotiations, Obi-Wan was the first to realize it was connected to a much bigger danger. He directly stated that the Sith had returned, quickly understanding how serious the threat was.
Even at the beginning of his training, Obi-Wan demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect with the Living Force. This allowed him to perceive the hidden and subtle influence of the true evil behind the galactic conflict – a threat that his experienced Master could only faintly sense. This early display of Obi-Wan’s strong intuition marked him as exceptionally gifted from the very start.
