Stephen King‘s stories have been adapted into movies and TV shows almost as frequently as he’s published books. Since the first adaptation, Brian De Palma’s Carrie, in 1976, there’s been a steady stream of King adaptations, and more are planned for the future. Fans of the horror master – known for his chilling tales of everything from haunted places to terrifying creatures – will soon have another way to enjoy one of his lesser-known adaptations when a popular Hulu series starts streaming on Netflix next month.
It’s unusual for a TV show to switch from one streaming service to another, but that’s exactly what’s happening with Castle Rock. Both seasons of the spooky, psychological thriller—which takes place in Stephen King’s made-up town of Castle Rock, Maine, and features Bill Skarsgård (known for playing Pennywise)—will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 16th.
Originally debuting on Hulu in the US in 2018, Castle Rock ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2020. It has always been available to stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States. Now, Warner Bros. Television, which owns the rights to the series, is licensing it to Netflix, a platform that has previously shown Castle Rock internationally, as reported by What’s on Netflix. For now, the show will remain available on Hulu as well.
Castle Rock Is an Overlooked Stephen King Adaptation That Ended Too Soon
It’s disappointing that Castle Rock only lasted two seasons, as it’s one of the most successful adaptations of Stephen King’s work so far. Instead of focusing on just one of his stories, the show feels like a natural part of the larger Stephen King world. Over its two seasons, it brilliantly combined a new story with familiar characters, ideas, and settings from his books, creating a fantastic tribute to the author. Dedicated King fans will enjoy spotting references to stories like Cujo, Needful Things, The Shining, and IT, among others.
With consistently high scores from both critics (88%) and viewers (79%) on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was a compelling and genuinely scary adaptation of Stephen King’s work, mirroring the gripping nature of his novels. Despite its quality, Castle Rock didn’t gain the widespread attention it deserved and was overshadowed by other popular shows. It was a series that deserved to continue beyond two seasons, and its recent addition to Netflix could finally give it the audience it deserves.
What’s New on Netflix?
While fans wait for the new series Castle Rock to arrive on Netflix December 16th, there’s still plenty to watch! November brought a variety of options, including shows like Broadchurch and the first episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, plus movies like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, the Back to the Future trilogy, and Paddington 2.
