David Tennant, known for his role in Doctor Who, has joined the cast of Time, the popular crime drama. Created by Jimmy McGovern and first airing in June 2021 on BBC One, the show is an anthology series that explores the lives of those inside and working at a young offenders’ institution. It won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Mini-Series and features a strong cast of well-known actors.
The first season of the show featured actors Sean Bean, known for Game of Thrones, and Stephen Graham from Adolescence. The second season, written by Paul McGovern and Helen Black and directed by Andrea Harkin, added Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Tamara Lawrance (Get Millie Black), and Jodie Whittaker, who previously starred in Doctor Who.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, David Tennant will be appearing in season 3 of Time. The acclaimed actor, who has been nominated for two BAFTAs, will star with Siobhan Finneran, who is returning as prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell. Finneran herself has been recognized with a BAFTA nomination for her supporting role in the popular drama Happy Valley.
In the next few episodes, viewers will see Marie-Louise, the prison chaplain, struggling with her faith while working at the young offenders’ institution. A tragic event causes conflict between her and Prison Officer Bailey, played by David Tennant. Bailey, who has been doing the job for a long time, is also facing a personal crisis, as he’s hiding something about what happened. As his guilt grows, the story explores whether he’ll confess the truth before it destroys him.
The story follows two teenagers, Peter and James, as they adjust to life in prison. James wrestles with the guilt of his actions and whether he can face his devastated parents after committing a violent crime. Meanwhile, Peter is torn between telling the truth about an innocent man’s death and remaining loyal to his family.
When the news was announced, the show’s creator, McGovern, expressed his excitement about the return of Finneran, the casting of Tennant as the lead, and Paul Whittington directing, describing the project as “fantastic.” Andrew Morrissey, an executive producer at BBC Studios Fiction, agreed and shared his thoughts on how the show has developed. Here are their comments:
Host McGovern is excited about the return of Siobhan Finneran and the addition of David Tennant as the lead, praising director Paul Whittington and predicting the project will be fantastic.
Morrissey said he’s thrilled to be working on a third season of ‘Time’ with such a talented group. This season will explore a different side of the prison system, and they discovered compelling stories during their research that they felt needed to be shared with viewers.
David Tennant, famous for playing the Tenth Doctor, has several exciting TV projects on the horizon. He’ll be starring in the drama Hide, returning for season two of Rivals, and appearing in the final season of Good Omens on Prime Video. Time is just the newest addition to a career filled with diverse roles, as Tennant effortlessly transitions between comedic and dramatic parts.
