The Resident Evil series is famous for enemies that relentlessly pursue players, but producer Masato Kumazawa says this feature will be limited in Resident Evil Requiem. In a Well Played interview, Kumazawa explained that Capcom intentionally didn’t want these pursuing enemies to be a central focus of the game.
We know people have different feelings about the stalker character, but our goal is to create a truly frightening survival horror game. We’ve taken past feedback into account to ensure it’s balanced and isn’t a central focus – it’s more of a minor element. Since this is a new game, we really wanted to prioritize finding diverse ways to scare players.
We want to put players in a wide variety of situations so they can truly feel scared and experience the horror we’re creating.
This suggests the company is trying something new with horror in Resident Evil Requiem. Director Koshi Nakanishi mentioned in September that the game will balance intense horror with moments of calm, letting players breathe. He explained that, unlike Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake, Requiem won’t be relentlessly scary throughout the entire experience.
When looking at Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2, it’s clear they follow a common design approach for the series. Maintaining constant, intense horror throughout an entire game is draining for players. Instead, the games use a dynamic pace – a really scary section is followed by moments of relief, like exploring quieter areas or engaging in action-packed combat. This allows players to recover before the horror ramps up again.
Like previous Resident Evil games, this installment follows a familiar pattern. However, we’ve introduced a new system that I’m still refining. My goal is to create a more dramatic contrast between moments of tension and relief – to really stretch out those emotional highs and lows. I want this game to be the most thrilling and unpredictable Resident Evil experience yet, and I think players will appreciate the effect once they play it.
The idea of enemies that relentlessly pursue you is common in horror games, and the Resident Evil series has some of the most memorable ones – like Mr. X from Resident Evil 2, Nemesis from Resident Evil 3, and Jack Baker from Resident Evil 7. Capcom has already announced that the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem will include a similar pursuing enemy, and a recent gameplay demo offered a first look at what to expect.
Resident Evil Requiem is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 27, 2026.
