After 41 Years, Dragon Ball Will Finally Decide Its Most Popular Character (And You Can Help)

November 20th, 2025 marked the 41st anniversary of the first Dragon Ball manga release. To celebrate, the series is planning a variety of events, including a long-awaited decision on who the most popular character is. Dragon Ball has a large and lovable cast, and fans have debated for years about who deserves the top spot. While Gohan is a popular choice, many fans strongly believe Vegeta should be considered the most popular character.

To settle the ongoing discussion, the Dragon Ball franchise is starting a new project called “DRAGON BALL THE ONE” – a fan vote kicking off November 20th at 12 PM JST. This isn’t a simple one-time poll, though. It’s a four-stage contest! Starting with 212 characters, fans will vote for their favorites between November 20th and 24th, which will narrow the field down to 80. And, staying true to the spirit of Dragon Ball, there’s a special feature: fans will have a chance to save characters who are close to being eliminated.

Dragon Ball Franchise Launches a Dynamic Worldwide Popularity Contest

After each round of voting, fans will be able to bring back one eliminated character in a special “Revival Battle” on Dragon Ball’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. This opportunity will only last for 24 hours. This process will repeat throughout the contest until the final stage, which runs from December 17th to December 24th at 12 PM JST and will feature 21 characters. The final results, revealing the most popular character in the Dragon Ball franchise, will be announced on January 24th, 2026, at 12 PM JST, and will be shown on the official Dragon Ball YouTube channel.

Besides the main competition, there are extra perks for participants. The top 80 characters, plus one brought back from elimination, will become social media icons. The next 40 characters, and another revived character, will be made into exclusive wallpapers. While plans for the final 21 characters haven’t been announced yet, fans have another exciting event to anticipate.

The official Dragon Ball X (formerly Twitter) account is running a contest where fans can win a large tapestry featuring all 212 characters. To enter, participants simply need to repost the contest announcement and follow the Dragon Ball account. Twenty winners will be chosen at random. Results are expected in early December, after the first round of the contest finishes. While unexpected as a way to celebrate the franchise’s 41st anniversary, this contest is a fun way for Dragon Ball to finally settle the debate over which character is the most popular.
