Live-action adaptations of anime are becoming increasingly popular, and Netflix’s successful One Piece series has opened doors for more projects that many thought wouldn’t be possible. Lionsgate is now developing a live-action movie based in the Naruto universe’s Hidden Leaf Village. The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Shang-Chi, but details are scarce. It appears fans may have to wait a while before seeing this new version of the beloved shonen story.
The upcoming live-action Naruto movie will be directed by Cretton, who also co-wrote the script alongside Tasha Huo. Huo, known for her work on Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, recently spoke with ScreenRant about the film, but unfortunately didn’t have any new information to share about a release date. She expressed her own excitement for the movie, saying, “I wish I did [have updates]. I also can’t wait to see it.” Currently, there’s no timeframe for when fans can expect to see Naruto adapted for live-action, meaning it could be quite a while before the film hits theaters. While it’s unclear how much of the original Naruto story the movie will cover, the early arcs are still considered highlights of the popular shonen series.
Naruto’s Live-Action History
Although there hasn’t been a live-action Naruto movie or TV show, the world of the Hidden Leaf has come to life through stage plays in Japan. These plays cover storylines from both the original Naruto series and Naruto: Shippuden. While plays based on the sequel series, Boruto, haven’t been produced yet, it’s likely we’ll see them in the future.
The Naruto story continues in the manga with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, but the anime hasn’t had new episodes featuring Naruto Uzumaki and his son in a while. Studio Pierrot is confirmed to be working on bringing the anime back, though there’s no news on when it will happen. They’re currently busy finishing the final season of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and restarting Black Clover, which makes a 2026 return for the ninja series uncertain. Since the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime ended, a lot has changed in the manga, so the new series will have a significant amount of story to adapt.
