Popular animated shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons are still featured on Fox’s Animation Domination, but they’re also increasingly releasing special episodes on streaming services. The Simpsons usually puts its specials on Disney+, while Family Guy releases them on Hulu. After a Halloween special earlier this year, Family Guy is planning a new Holiday Special for Hulu on November 28th. Titled Disney’s Hulu’s Family Guy’s Hallmark Channel’s Lifetime’s Familiar Holiday Movie, the episode will comically center around Peter and Lois, though some key elements of the show will be different.
The upcoming special will feature Peter and Lois Griffin, with Stewie playing a funny supporting role. However, Meg and Chris won’t be included. According to showrunners Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin, who spoke with TV Insider, this wasn’t a random decision. While previous specials had the whole family, they intentionally left Chris and Meg out this time.
It’s often tough to give all our characters enough to do in these larger, concept-driven episodes. We’ve even joked about not using Meg very much, like when she played a silent creature in our Star Wars episodes. So, for this holiday episode, it felt more natural to focus the storyline on Stewie as the child. We did have a funny moment with Chris, but sometimes we just don’t have enough space to develop everything, especially when we have so many jokes to fit in.
Family Guy is Celebrating The Season
The creators of this new Family Guy special drew inspiration from the many holiday movies released by Hallmark and Lifetime, intentionally using familiar themes and storylines. According to Appel, their research process involved quickly understanding the basic formula – a widowed or lonely man, a successful city woman, and so on – allowing them creative freedom with the plot. He jokingly described it as a ‘lazy half-reading of Wikipedia,’ but emphasized they knew the template and where their comedy could take the story. With Family Guy already confirmed for season twenty-seven, viewers can likely expect more holiday specials in the years to come.
