There’s a Christmas Batman Movie Hiding on Streaming That You Didn’t Even Know Existed

A Batman Christmas movie is currently available to stream, and it’s one many fans may not know about! Even better, it was popular enough to get its own spin-off series, which is also streaming now. There’s always a lot of Batman content available – classics like Batman: The Animated Series, and well-loved shows such as Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Batman Beyond. But this new movie, released in 2023, quietly gained traction and led to the spin-off now available on Amazon Prime Video.

Though different from typical Batman cartoons, Merry Little Batman is a charming Christmas film that’s definitely worth checking out.

Merry Little Batman Is Streaming On Prime Video

Let’s be clear: Merry Little Batman isn’t the Batman world most comic book fans are used to. This has led some serious Batman fans to strongly criticize the resulting Bat-Fam series, objecting to the animation, humor, and character changes. However, it’s really aimed at a younger audience, and it’s not nearly as flawed as some people claim. In fact, the Merry Little Batman movie itself is actually quite enjoyable.

Mike Roth, the director known for Regular Show, teamed up with writer Morgan Evans to create Merry Little Batman. The animation style is designed to show the world through the eyes of young Damian Wayne. Some fans might be surprised, though, as this Damian isn’t the arrogant Robin they’re used to. This version, Little Batman, is a loving son who wants to assist his dad in fighting crime. The twist is that Batman had already eliminated crime in Gotham City, making it safe and sound, before Damian was even born.

During the holidays, eight-year-old Damian Wayne is left in Alfred’s care when Batman is called away on a Justice League mission. When the Joker unexpectedly appears, Damian decides to take matters into his own hands, dressing up as a miniature Batman to defend his home and Gotham. The film features distinctive character designs by Mike Roth, portraying Batman as a playfully large father figure, Alfred with a noticeable hunch and limited mobility, and the villains with striking and individual looks.

Instead of releasing on HBO Max, these Batman animated series—including Batman: Caped Crusader and Merry Little Batman—ended up on Prime Video because Warner Bros. Discovery was looking to reduce expenses. Amazon’s acquisition of these shows ultimately led to the creation of the Bat-Fam series. Honestly, the result is a fun, energetic take on the Batman family dynamic, similar in style to Teen Titans Go!, and that’s a good thing! James Gunn has confirmed that these stories are considered separate from the main DC Universe, meaning they aren’t directly connected to the larger storyline.

Bat-Fam is a Merry Little Batman Spin-Off Series

The actors who voiced the characters in Merry Little Batman are reprising their roles in the new series, Bat-Fam. Mike Roth, who previously earned five Primetime Emmys for his work on Regular Show, is returning as the series’ animator and showrunner, bringing his unique and often quirky storytelling style. Luke Wilson will once again voice Batman, with Yonas Kibreab as Damian Wayne and James Cromwell as Alfred.

Okay, so this show gets really weird, and honestly, it reminds me a lot of Teen Titans Go! It’s got these crazy plot points and a totally expanded Bat-Family. Like, Man-Bat is literally living in the Wayne Manor bell tower! And get this – the ghost of Ra’s al Ghul keeps stirring up trouble. They’ve even added Alfred’s niece, Alicia, who’s running a program to help villains turn good, and this is wild – a younger version of Volcana, thanks to a dip in the Lazarus Pit! It’s all about this group – the original Bat-Family plus these new additions – trying to keep Gotham safe and keep their family life from falling apart. It’s a lot!

The new Bat-Family series has gotten mixed reactions. Some viewers dislike the animation, changes to characters like Damian Wayne, and its focus on humor for younger audiences. However, similar to Merry Little Batman, the show is endearing, uniquely quirky enough to hold an adult’s attention, and offers a surprisingly likable version of Damian Wayne – a welcome change from how he’s been portrayed in animation recently.
