The Acolyte Creator Reveals What Surprised Her About Star Wars Show’s Cancellation

Leslye Headland, the creator of The Acolyte, recently shared her thoughts on the show’s cancellation and what she found most surprising about the decision, a year after it happened.

What did The Acolyte creator say about the cancelled Star Wars show?

I was reading an interview with Leslye Headland over at The Wrap about The Acolyte, and she explained why it only got one season on Disney+. Apparently, it was a combination of things – not enough people were watching, and creatively, things just didn’t quite come together as hoped. Honestly, she didn’t seem all that surprised it was canceled after just one season, which is a bit sad, but understandable.

I wasn’t shocked by the situation, Headland explained. What did surprise me was how quickly it happened and how public it became, as well as the way things were managed. Once I started getting specific calls about the reaction – the criticism and how many people were watching – I realized it was only a matter of time before the outcome was certain.

As a big streaming fan, I was looking at the numbers, and The Acolyte actually did really well on Disney+ this year – it was the second most-watched show overall in 2024, according to Luminate. But, and this is pretty common, a lot of people tuned out after the first couple of episodes. It started strong, but the audience definitely dipped.

Headland expressed that she wished the show, which was new and experimenting with different approaches, had been given more time to find its audience. However, she acknowledged that the decision to end it wasn’t hers and she respects it, despite being disappointed.

Okay, so I just finished watching ‘The Acolyte,’ and it’s a really interesting departure for Star Wars. It’s set towards the end of the High Republic era, and the story centers around a former Padawan—played by Amandla Stenberg—who teams up with her old Jedi Master to solve a string of unsettling crimes. The cast is fantastic, really bringing depth to the story – you’ve got Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, and even Manny Jacinto all involved. It’s a solid ensemble that definitely adds to the show’s appeal.

Viewers didn’t react positively to ‘The Acolyte,’ leading to negative reviews and unfortunately, racist comments online. Despite this unfair criticism, the show’s creator, Leslye Headland, still loves the Star Wars universe.

Headland said she doesn’t have any regrets and remains a huge Star Wars fan. She also expressed her continued love for her show and believes it was a great success.
