7 Most Dangerous Marvel Characters From Hell

A new Marvel Comics series, Spirits of Violence, unites various Ghost Rider characters to fight supernatural threats attempting to unleash Hell on Earth. This is particularly dangerous because Hell in the Marvel Universe is consistently portrayed as an incredibly perilous realm. It’s not a single place, but rather a hierarchy of different Hells, each ruled by a powerful demon. While Mephisto is well-known, many other demons exist on his level, and even more creatures serve them. Overall, Hell is a far more dangerous place than Earth in the Marvel stories.

From the villain Mephisto and his followers to other terrifying demons from Hell, here’s a rundown of the most dangerous beings from the underworld.

7) Johnny Blaze

The most well-known figure from Hell actually started life on Earth. This person made a deal with the demon Mephisto – a particularly bad one – by trading their soul. Johnny Blaze was a stunt cyclist whose mentor fell ill with cancer. Desperate to save him, Johnny made the deal with Mephisto, but tragically, his mentor still died in an accident. Unable to break the deal, Johnny was bound to the spirit of Zarathos, transforming him into the Ghost Rider. Since then, Johnny has walked a complex path, acting as both a hero and a villain, and even briefly ruling Hell. While he wasn’t the original Ghost Rider, he’s become the most famous version.

6) Satana Hellstrom

Satana Hellstrom might not be as well-known as her brother, but she’s incredibly powerful. Born to Satan and a human mother, she’s the sister of Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan. Though two years younger, Satana’s practice of dark magic with her father led to her mother’s death. After that, she was raised in Hell, becoming even more formidable. As a succubus, Satana survives by consuming human souls.

5) Blackheart

Blackheart is the son of Mephisto, born from the dark energy created by years of killings at Christ’s Crown Hill. He eventually rose to power in that realm and, as Mephisto’s legitimate heir, delved into the depths of evil, becoming a foe to many Earth-based heroes. More recently, however, he’s attempted to turn his life around. After being banished from Hell and transformed into a human by Mephisto, he joined Avengers Academy. Blackheart is incredibly powerful, able to unleash massive blasts of magical energy and summon Hellfire.

4) Daimon Hellstrom

Daimon Hellstrom, also known as the Son of Satan, has been a recurring character in Marvel comics for decades. He initially gained prominence as a member of the Defenders, where he fought alongside heroes and even married Hellcat. However, his story took a tragic turn as his demonic side consumed him, leading to devastating consequences, including the death of his wife. Since then, he hasn’t been a true hero, but he’s also not a typical villain. He’s largely a solitary figure focused on survival. Notably, Hellstrom rules his own dimension of Hell, where he’s incredibly powerful, and even on Earth, he possesses immense magical abilities.

3) Lilith

As a film and comic book fan, I’ve always been fascinated by characters with deep roots in mythology, and Lilith is a prime example. Unlike many Marvel heroes and villains who are original creations, Lilith actually comes from folklore – she shares that space with figures like Thor, Odin, Zeus, and even Satan! The story goes that she was originally a fallen angel, cast out of Heaven with Samael (who became Satan) and was even his wife for a time. But she wasn’t content to just follow his path; she struck out on her own and became a powerful force in her own right. She’s an Annunaki goddess, meaning she possesses incredibly ancient and potent magical abilities – some of the oldest and most powerful around. What’s really exciting is that Marvel hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface of her full potential; her powers seem limitless, and there’s so much story to explore!

2) One Below All

In Marvel Comics, the One Above All has long been considered the equivalent of God. More recently, in 2018’s Immortal Hulk #4, the One Below All was introduced. This powerful being rules The Below Place, essentially the deepest level of Hell, where those affected by Gamma radiation end up. Within The Below Place is a Green Door, which allows beings to return from death. It’s believed the One Below All has a connection to Bruce Banner and is the origin of all Gamma energy, creating both heroes and villains on Earth.

1) Mephisto

Mephisto is one of Marvel’s most well-known villains, largely because he’s been around for a very long time. Originally intended as Marvel’s take on the Devil, he’s now just one of many powerful demons ruling parts of Hell. He’s particularly famous for making deals – contracts that always benefit him and often have hidden, cruel twists, like the time he traded for Johnny Blaze’s soul, only to allow the saved person to die later. Over the years, Mephisto has battled almost every Marvel hero, from the Avengers and Doctor Strange to Moon Knight and countless others.
