The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is almost here! The first set of episodes will be released on November 26th, bringing the story – which started nearly ten years ago – to an epic conclusion. This season is meant to be the definitive ending, resolving all storylines and character arcs. With the danger from Vecna increasing, some beloved characters may not survive. Fans have been worried about potential deaths for months, and recent comments from the creators, the Duffer brothers, haven’t eased those concerns.
I recently read an interview with the creators of Stranger Things, Ross and Matt Duffer, and they gave us a little hint of what to expect in season five! They’ve always wanted to make each season bigger and more intense as the kids grow up, and with so many new fans joining, they’re really pushing the boundaries. Ross joked about hoping parents won’t be too upset! But here’s the thing: Matt said season five might not have as much overall violence as season four, but it will have the most shocking and gruesome death of any season so far. Get ready, because it sounds like it’s going to be intense!
It’s no surprise that fans of Stranger Things are buzzing on social media after the Duffer brothers shared some recent comments. One X user, @mikuwheeler, even wrote, “Get ready to say goodbye to Steve!” Here’s a look at some of the reactions people are sharing:
SAY YOUR GOODBYES TO STEVE

and hopefully its murray

It seems like a main character is going to die, and the author is choosing to give them a dramatic, violent death – which is surprising considering it’s not someone like Murray (not meant as a criticism!).

These responses are wild! It’s definitely not Jonathan, Steve, or Lucas… I don’t think it’s any of the main characters, actually. The Duffer brothers never suggested that, and that article is just making assumptions. Everyone needs to relax.

Will a Major Stranger Things Character Die in Season 5?
Throughout its run, Stranger Things hasn’t been afraid to kill characters, but it’s generally avoided removing anyone from the central group of friends. Deaths have usually been limited to impactful supporting characters who appeared for a single season, like Bob Newby and Eddie Munson. Despite the expanding cast, the core group has remained safe, leading even star Gaten Matarazzo to suggest that killing off a main character could increase the show’s tension and stakes.
While it’s possible to create tension without killing characters, the show’s creator has a good point: a major character death would immediately raise the stakes, signaling that no one is safe. Killing off a new, popular character can be impactful, but it would be far more shocking to lose someone viewers have followed for years. The creators considered killing off Eleven and Steve in Season 1 but ultimately decided against it. Now that Season 5 will be the show’s finale, they might reconsider those ideas, as there’s no need to keep characters alive for future seasons.
Naturally, the creators aren’t revealing much beyond hinting at a “most violent death.” This could technically happen to almost anyone – a minor character or even a main one. While a gruesome death for a random character would certainly increase the horror, it feels like a missed opportunity to really shock the audience. A more impactful and memorable moment would likely involve a character viewers have grown to know and care about.
No matter who dies in a shocking way, it shows the creators of Stranger Things weren’t afraid to take risks with Season 5. They aimed for the show to evolve alongside its viewers, making this season potentially the most emotionally impactful and grown-up yet. It’ll be fascinating to see if this major death happens early on – perhaps as a dramatic cliffhanger to signal a new, powerful danger. Or, it could be saved for the final episodes, serving as a key moment in the show’s conclusion.
