Implicit Conversions, the team responsible for bringing classic PlayStation 1 and 2 games to PlayStation Plus Premium through emulation, is secretly developing an emulator for the PlayStation 3.
Bill Litshauer, the company’s leader, says their main priority right now is making PlayStation 2 support better. However, in a conversation with Mystic, he also mentioned that emulating PlayStation 3 games is likely possible down the line – maybe on the PlayStation 5, and definitely on the PlayStation 6.
He said:
We think it’s achievable. It likely won’t run on older consoles like the Switch or PS4, but it could work on the PS5, and definitely on the PS6 when it’s released. It’s technically within our capabilities; we just need to dedicate the necessary time, effort, and funding to make it happen.
Litshauer said that while his team is still considering support for the PlayStation 3, it’s not a high priority because they haven’t received many requests for it. They are working on it nonetheless.
He continued:
We’re collaborating with an external partner to get this project started, giving us a solid foundation to build on. While it’s something we’re exploring, it’s not our main focus right now. PS2 is currently a higher priority due to greater customer demand, but our engineers are enjoying working on it.
Honestly, for a long time, everyone thought emulating the PS3 on PC was impossible. It’s just a really complicated system! But lately, projects like RPCS3 have been making incredible progress, and it’s getting better and better all the time.
It seems, as Litshauer suggests, that the main challenge is simply the time and effort needed to accomplish this.
We hope Sony will prioritize this project, as adding PlayStation 3 games to the PS Plus Premium subscription service would be a fantastic addition for players.
