A truly classic PS2 game – and one of the greatest video games ever made – is currently available for free with certain PlayStation Plus subscriptions, but that won’t last much longer. Sony recently revealed that nine games will be removed from the PS Plus Extra and Premium libraries in mid-December. While most aren’t hugely popular, one departure will be especially disappointing for those who fondly remember the PS2 era.
On December 16th, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members on both PS4 and PS5 will no longer have free access to Grand Theft Auto 3: The Definitive Edition. Unfortunately, you can’t buy this game on its own in the PlayStation Store. Instead, it’s only available as part of the $60 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which also includes remasters of GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas. While this classic game might return to the PS Plus Extra and Premium libraries in the future, it usually takes a significant amount of time before removed games are added back.
About the Game
The original Grand Theft Auto 3 is a true classic that needs little explanation. Released in 2001, it became one of the best-selling PlayStation 2 games ever, launching both the Grand Theft Auto series and Rockstar Games into the spotlight. While newer GTA games are better by today’s standards, Grand Theft Auto 3 was a groundbreaking release that paved the way for everything that followed, earning a stellar 97 on Metacritic. Even though it doesn’t feel quite as fresh in 2025 compared to games like Vice City or San Andreas, it’s still enjoyable, especially for those who remember playing it when it first came out – nostalgia definitely helps! What you’re experiencing now isn’t the original, however, but the “Definitive Edition,” a 2021 remaster that updates the game and makes it more fun to play today.
