A live-action movie based on the popular anime series Mobile Suit Gundam is in development, and the lead actor has been cast – he’s known for his previous role as a superhero in the DC Universe. More and more major anime series are being adapted for film lately, leading to a surge in live-action projects. While many are in the works, the new Gundam movie is particularly interesting because it’s being made in collaboration with Japan.
Bandai Namco Filmworks America and Sunrise are partnering with Legendary Pictures to create a live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie, which has been in the works for several years. Recent reports suggest casting is underway, and The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Noah Centineo (known for his roles in Black Adam and Street Fighter) is in discussions to join the film, though his specific role hasn’t been announced yet.
Gundam Live-Action Movie Recruits DC and Street Fighter Star

Sources say Centineo is in discussions to join Sydney Sweeney in the upcoming live-action Mobile Suit Gundam film. While details about their roles are still under wraps, and many aspects of the movie – like the plot and location – remain unknown, the long-running Gundam franchise, with its 50+ year history and diverse storylines, offers a lot of possibilities for this new adaptation.
The upcoming live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie might take the story in a completely new direction. Because the Gundam franchise is so expansive, there’s room for different interpretations, and this film could explore one. Jim Mickle, known for Sweet Tooth on Netflix, wrote and will direct the movie. He’s producing it with his partner, Linda Moran, through their company, Nightshade. Bandai Namco Filmworks America and Legendary Pictures are also producing, which should reassure fans of the original Gundam anime.
Will Live-Action Gundam Work as a Movie?
With so many anime and manga being adapted into live-action films and series, Gundam feels like a particularly good fit. Its story of war between factions, featuring giant Gundam robots as the main weapons, is relatively straightforward and should appeal to a global audience. If the filmmakers can successfully bring the dynamic action of those Gundam mechs to life, it could be a real success.
The biggest cost for this new project will be making the Gundam look realistic on screen, but it’s absolutely crucial. If the visual effects aren’t top-notch for a live-action Gundam movie, it won’t succeed in theaters. If we get it right, this could be a huge blockbuster franchise. However, there’s still a lot of work to be done before we reach that point.
