The anime series Dandadan took the anime world by storm in 2024. Based on a manga by Yukinobu Tatsu originally published on Shonen Jump+, the series already had a dedicated fanbase. However, its popularity after the anime’s release far exceeded expectations based on the manga alone. Before the anime premiered in October 2024, the manga had over four million copies in circulation, a number that quickly doubled by December. By October 2025, sales had surpassed 12 million and continue to grow. The anime also broke streaming records on Netflix, becoming a massive talking point for fans worldwide.
The anime’s second season premiered this summer to even greater acclaim, faithfully adapting some of the most beloved story arcs from the original manga. While the story and animation are widely considered top-tier, the real reason for its success may be something else. At Anime Pasadena, a yearly anime and pop culture event, Abby Trott – the English voice actress for Momo Ayase – revealed what she believes is driving the anime’s huge popularity, as reported by ScreenRant.
Dandadan Star Explains the Opening’s Contribution to the Anime’s Success

When asked why the anime has been so popular, Trott said it’s due to a few things. Mainly, it successfully mixes many different types of stories – like action, romance, comedy, science fiction, and the supernatural – which appeals to a wide audience.
She also mentioned the opening theme, “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts, which became incredibly popular very quickly. People were sharing edits and memes of it all over the internet. The song’s lyrics were written specifically for the anime and are packed with references and hidden details. It created a huge buzz – even people who hadn’t heard of Dandadan before were intrigued by the song.
The opening theme for Dandadan quickly became a viral sensation, racking up millions of views on YouTube with its upbeat music and striking visuals. It sparked a lot of buzz among anime fans, piquing the interest of those who hadn’t heard of the show. As the theme continued to trend, more people started watching the series itself, and Dandadan didn’t disappoint! The show immediately grabbed viewers with its humor and exciting, over-the-top action.
The anime Dandadan, animated by Science SARU, is a standout shonen series in recent years, beautifully bringing Tatsu’s already detailed artwork to life. It’s a thrilling mix of action, horror, comedy, and romance, following the story of characters who battle supernatural and alien threats to defend their city. A third season has been confirmed, though an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet. The original manga is still being published and can be read on the Manga Plus app.
