I’ve been so thrilled to see horror movies make a real comeback! After the intense, often gruesome, films of the 2000s like Saw and Hostel, the 2010s brought something different – movies that really made you think. We started seeing horror films like Get Out, The Conjuring, and Hereditary that critics loved and that explored deeper ideas. And then there was this incredible film that kind of snuck up on everyone – it became one of the best horror movies of the decade, and a truly standout entry in the genre. I was so excited to see it just landed on Hulu, along with its sequel!
I was so excited when Don’t Breathe 2 hit Hulu on November 10th, and now even better, the original Don’t Breathe is streaming there too, as of November 15th! It’s a seriously intense horror thriller from 2016, directed by Fede Álvarez. It stars Stephen Lang as Norman Nordstrom – he’s this blind veteran, wounded in the Gulf War, and a group of young thieves break into his house thinking they’ve found an easy target. Boy, are they wrong! He quickly turns the tables and basically hunts them down inside his own home. It’s a wild ride!
Don’t Breathe Is a Tense, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Thriller
Don’t Breathe is a truly terrifying movie – not for those who scare easily. Critics have hailed it as one of the best horror films in decades, and it delivers relentless tension and brutality. The film cleverly turns the typical home invasion story on its head, creating a gripping and claustrophobic thriller where the burglars become the hunted. Director Fede Álvarez expertly builds suspense through tight camerawork, masterful sound, and even in the quieter scenes, leaving you on the edge of your seat.
Lang’s portrayal of the Blind Man is also remarkable. Even without much dialogue, he creates a truly captivating character. He starts as someone the audience feels sorry for, but gradually transforms into a fierce and physically intimidating presence.
While Don’t Breathe 2 isn’t a terrible movie, it doesn’t capture what made the first one so good. Critics clearly agree – the sequel only received a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a significant drop from the original’s impressive 88% “Certified Fresh” score. The new film moved away from the suspenseful horror of the first, becoming a more conventional, and occasionally over-the-top, action movie. It lost the original’s gripping tension and attempted to reinvent the villain as a sympathetic character.
Other Horror Movies Now on Hulu
Hulu has been adding a lot of great horror movies lately, and November was no exception. Along with films like Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2, subscribers can now stream Season of the Witch, Apollo 18, and Osiris. Two more titles, The Ugly Stepsister and The First Omen, will be added on November 25th and November 30th, respectively.
