A Cult 1980s Horror Movie Got an Underrated Remake 2 Months Ago & You Probably Missed It

Original horror stories are incredibly popular right now. Just this year, 2025, we’ve already seen several potential classics released, beginning with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners in April. The director of Black Panther ventured into vampire lore, and the resulting film was a hit. Sinners‘ success helped smaller, unique films like Bring Her Back and Companion also find an audience. However, Zach Cregger’s Weapons has quickly become the standout horror film of the year, gaining massive attention through clever marketing and positive reviews.

It’s amazing how many talented filmmakers come up with fresh ideas, which makes you wonder why studios bother to remake existing movies. Remakes can be profitable, but they need to be exceptionally well-made to succeed. However, financial success isn’t the only measure of a good remake. Positive reviews and enthusiastic fan reactions are also important. There’s one remake coming out in 2025 that’s showing promise in these areas, even though it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention yet.

One 1980s Horror Film Was Ahead of Its Time

Horror movies in the 1980s often relied on graphic violence rather than building suspense. Popular franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street mostly used the same formula to scare audiences. Filmmaker Kevin Tenney wanted to try something different. He came up with a story about a college student who accidentally summons the spirit of a decades-old serial killer while using a Ouija board. The studio, Cinema Board, was impressed and gave Tenney the funding to make his film.

When Witchboard came out, it was a financial success, making $7.4 million despite only costing $2 million to produce. However, it wasn’t without its problems – critics found the ending disappointing and didn’t think it was scary. Director Kevin Tenney wasn’t deterred and continued making horror films, even directing a Witchboard sequel in 1993 that didn’t follow the original story. Over time, people’s opinions of Witchboard shifted. Fans began to enjoy its ambitious ideas and distinctive style, creating a dedicated cult following that remains active today. Now, their enthusiasm is being rewarded with a remake that’s finally giving the film the recognition it deserves.

Witchboard‘s 2025 Remake Might Be Better Than the First

The classic horror film Witchboard is getting a modern update nearly four decades after its original release. The new film, directed by Chuck Russell and starring Madison Iseman, Aaron Dominguez, Melanie Jarnson, Charlie Tahan, Antonia Desplat, and Jamie Campbell Bower (known from Stranger Things), is set in New Orleans. It follows a couple trying to launch a new restaurant, but their plans are disrupted when they find a Ouija board and accidentally awaken a dangerous witch from the 17th century.

Okay, so Witchboard seemed to have all the right ingredients – a lot of critics actually liked it! But here’s the thing: it only made about half a million dollars in theaters. It didn’t exactly explode at the box office. Still, I don’t think that means it’s doomed. The original has clearly stuck with people over the years, which is a good sign. Plus, we’re living in a streaming world now, and things can really take off out of nowhere. So, there’s still hope for this one!
