How to Do The Barracuda Trials and Achieve Marlin Rank | OSRS

Basics and General Tips

You can currently participate in three different Barracuda Trials. Each trial becomes available as you reach a new Sailing level.

  • The Tempor Tantrum (The Storm Tempor) – Level 30
  • The Jubbly Jive (Backwater) – Level 55
  • The Gwenith Glide (Porth Gwenith) – Level 72

Just a heads-up, you can only use Skiffs for these trials! But don’t worry, all the upgrades I’ve worked so hard on and the facilities I’ve built are still available. I’m definitely going to build and customize my ship as much as possible to get ready – you should too!

Each trial consists of three levels: Swordfish, Shark, and Marlin. You progress to the next level by completing the current one. So, finishing Swordfish unlocks Shark, and finishing Shark unlocks Marlin.

Okay, so as a new player, the early levels are pretty forgiving – the courses are easier and you don’t have to rush. But honestly, it’s worth pushing through because the higher ranks give way better rewards, especially Sailing XP, which is what you really need to level up!

In addition to the time limit, each challenge will also ask you to find and gather lost supply crates. The number of crates needed will vary depending on the specific challenge.

For anyone doing Marlin Ranks, we highly recommend using the RuneLite client with the Object Markers plugin enabled. This will make it much easier to find the lost supplies crates, as you can highlight them by shift-clicking.

Next, practice each Marlin trial without worrying about time. Simply plan your path and identify the location of all the crates.

Use different colors to mark where you want to pick up items along the route, or at specific laps. We’ll provide the route details later, so you don’t need to worry about that right now!

This step might be a little tedious, but it will significantly improve your chances of completing the run within the time limit.

We strongly suggest installing a Wind Catcher on your Skiff as soon as you reach Sailing Level 53. It lets you use Wind Motes (pictured above) to significantly increase your speed.

This is crucial for future attempts, particularly when trying to achieve a high rank on Marlin. Please prioritize getting it done quickly!

Finally, we suggest packing Repair Kits. They’ll help you quickly fix your boat if you run into anything while sailing.

Now, let’s go over the recommended routes to beat the Marlin rank time for each trial.

Recommended Marlin Rank Routes

The Tempor Tantrum

The first Barracuda Trial is the easiest one. You simply need to sail around the area, collecting crates as you go.

You’ll also need to transport rum between the southern and northern boats. Their locations create checkpoints as you circle the central area.

For the Marlin rank you need 36 Crates and 3 Rum within 4m 30s.

Watch out for the rapids – they look like swirling whirlpools on the water. Hitting these rapids will give you a speed boost, and that’s important for finishing within the time allowed.

While you’re navigating, be sure to steer clear of the dark storm clouds and any rocks you see. Colliding with either will damage your boat and slow you down.

This trial should be pretty straightforward if you remember these points and practice a little.

The Jubbly Jive

Important: Successfully completing the Shark rank in this trial will reward you with a Captured Wind Mote. You can use this mote to craft a Wind Catcher, and we suggest doing so before attempting the Marlin rank.

This trial ramps things up compared to the previous one by adding a few new gimmicks.

The first hazard you’ll encounter is murky, green water that bubbles to the surface. Sailing through it will significantly slow your boat, so you’ll need to navigate carefully to avoid it.

To deal with these polluted waters, reduce your sail area and use Wind Motes to increase your speed. As we discussed earlier, having these things prepared beforehand is important.

To get frogs, you’ll need to wait for the Supply Boat, which travels along the route shown at the top of the screen.

Next, you’ll attract the Jubbly by tossing frogs at the flags positioned along the path. The order in which to hit the flags is shown in the top left corner of your screen.

We strongly suggest familiarizing yourself with the route indicated on the map. Specifically, remember when and where to adjust your sails and utilize Wind Motes.

Honestly, on top of everything else, getting those crates is a real challenge! To reach the Marlin rank, I need to grab 56 of them, and then lure that tricky Jubbly bird to the white flag three times, all within 5 minutes and 21 seconds. It’s tough, but I’m determined to get there!

You’ll also need to practice this one a lot. It’s quite challenging because of the sharp turns needed to steer clear of the dirty water, but we have confidence in your ability to succeed!

The Gwenith Glide

This last trial in Marlin is actually the simplest one. The only new element is the use of colored portals, which transport you around the level and are essential for finding the correct path.

Okay, so there’s a ton of ice floating around, and you really don’t want to hit it. It slows my boat down and actually damages it, which is super annoying. I have to be really careful with my steering to dodge all those ice crystals, just like with those nasty water patches.

Other than gathering all the crates, there’s nothing else you need to worry about. No treasure hunting, no wildlife—just straightforward sailing!

To succeed in this challenge, focus on memorizing the route shown and practicing it repeatedly. Your piloting skills will be crucial, as you need to collect 96 crates in under 6 minutes and 9 seconds.

That concludes our guide! You now have all the information you need to finish the Barracuda Trials and earn the Marlin rank in Old School RuneScape. We hope you have good luck with them!
