As a big fan of Saturday Night Live, I always think the show really kicks off with the host’s monologue. Though they usually start with a quick ‘cold open’ – Lorne Michaels actually claims he came up with that term! – those usually feature just the regular cast tackling current events. But it’s always a fun surprise when the host pops up in the cold open too, and Miles Teller has definitely made a habit of doing just that!
After recently hosting Saturday Night Live, Teller was a guest on The Tonight Show. As you’d expect, Jimmy Fallon immediately wanted to talk about his SNL experience. Fallon brought up the show’s cold opens right away, noting that Teller had participated in them both times he hosted. Fallon wondered why Teller would add that extra challenge, and Teller’s response made a lot of sense…
I’m really excited about this! As a longtime fan and now cast member of SNL, getting to say ‘Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!’ is incredible. And now I even have a Chris Cuomo impression – I actually developed it just this week! That’s the thrill of doing live television.
Like many people, I’ve been a dedicated fan of Saturday Night Live for as long as I can remember. I practically grew up watching it, and even spent a lot of time rewatching old episodes on Comedy Central. Hosting would be amazing, but there’s something special about the unique feeling of saying “Live from New York.”
Many well-known performers have done it over the years. If you think of famous comedians from the past five decades, there’s a good chance they’ve all performed this bit at some point. You can even see Teller do it in the sketch linked below…
While there are no promises, most people wouldn’t be surprised to see Teller host Saturday Night Live again. He’s hosted twice before to great reviews, and his career is really taking off – he’s currently receiving a lot of praise for his work in the A24 film Eternity. Still young and with a promising future, it’s likely his path will cross with SNL again, especially since he’s openly talked about how much he enjoys the show and wants to return.
The show is currently taking a break, but it will be back with three new episodes before Christmas. These episodes will feature some guest hosts, and we’ll see if any of them get to be in the show’s opening sketch.
