Help Is On the Way, Dear: 13 Secrets About Mrs. Doubtfire

Helloo!

As someone with a warm, grandmotherly voice – and a fondness for evening face masks – might say, naturally.

I still remember it like it was yesterday! Even though it’s been 32 years since Mrs. Doubtfire came out, that incredibly unsettling (but hilarious!) scene of Robin Williams’ face… well, it’s burned into my memory. He just played Daniel Hillard, a dad doing everything he could to be there for his kids after a tough separation, and it was brilliant.

After losing a custody battle and wanting to be closer to his children, a jobless actor disguises himself as a housekeeper and nanny to spend more time with them.

The bizarre scheme eventually falls apart in a chaotic and noticeable way, but the 1993 movie perfectly highlighted Williams’ talent for combining energetic humor, sharp intelligence, and genuine emotion.

The movie isn’t just funny; it also feels real and relatable for modern families,” the Academy Award-winning actor explained to TopMob News upon the film’s release. “Families today come in many forms, and this movie reflects that—it’s not just the traditional image you often see.

Having gone through a divorce himself, the father of three understood what Mrs. Doubtfire was feeling, and his empathy seemed to come from deep within.

Let’s not forget, the Chris Columbus-directed hit was, above all, a very funny movie, particularly when the director gave Robin Williams the freedom to improvise and be himself.

In a 2023 interview with Business Insider, director Columbus explained that he had to use four cameras while filming because the actor was so unpredictable. He wanted to capture the reactions of the other actors since no one knew what the actor would say next.

Honestly, I was practically crying with laughter – seriously, I choked on my shrimp! But that’s a good thing, because it meant we were about to dive into all the fun behind-the-scenes stories about Mrs. Doubtfire. Get comfortable, because we’re about to share some amazing secrets!

Robin Williams’ character, Daniel Hillard, had a brother who worked as a makeup artist – played by Harvey Fierstein – which explained how he could create such a convincing disguise. They experimented with different appearances and voices before finally landing on the iconic Mrs. Doubtfire, supposedly from Elbourne, England.

Williams jokingly told TopMob News before the movie came out on November 24, 1993, that watching it was like summoning the character. He described the version of her that appeared as a much nicer, more gentle figure – a sweet older woman with a blue mouth.

Not surprisingly, Mrs. Doubtfire‘s makeup team won an Oscar for their efforts in 1994.

Ve Neill, along with Greg Cannom and Yolanda Toussieng, told TopMob News in 2018 that working on the project was the most challenging of her career, but ultimately very rewarding. She maintained a close friendship with Robin Williams throughout his life, describing him as a ‘fantastic’ person.

Oh my gosh, it was insane trying to get his suit right! He was so sweaty, poor Robin! I remember having to layer all the latex pieces on top of each other, making absolutely sure there wasn’t even a tiny gap. Seriously, every single piece had to overlap perfectly, and his whole face… completely covered! It was a nightmare to make sure it was sealed, but seeing him in it? Totally worth it.

And from the neck down…

Williams explained to TopMob that being fully covered in a costume like that feels like being inside a giant condom. He noted that if it gets too hot, the makeup can start to melt and run, making the performer look like a character from the movie House of Wax. He emphasized the importance of knowing when to take a break to protect the makeup and using the right lighting.

Sally Field, a two-time Oscar winner, was a true professional. She stayed completely in character as Miranda Hillard, Daniel’s frustrated ex-wife, even though Robin Williams was making everyone else laugh constantly.

Field remembered telling Yahoo! Entertainment in 2022 that she was the only one who didn’t react strongly during filming. She’d often ask, ‘Is that all?’ and keep acting, which frustrated her scene partner because he couldn’t get the reaction he wanted.

According to Field, Williams never quite pulled it off. But during the filming of the final restaurant scene, Pierce Brosnan unexpectedly made a fart noise with his arm. Field found it so hilarious that filming had to be stopped for the day. Robin Williams then jokingly pointed out that it was surprisingly simple humor that had gotten such a reaction.

Pierce Brosnan, who played Stu Dunmeyer, Miranda’s boyfriend after her divorce in the movie, still remembers the first time he saw Robin Williams on the set in San Francisco.

In May, actor Pierce Brosnan told TopMob News about how excited he was to work with a colleague he deeply admired. He described visiting the makeup trailer and seeing his co-star wearing a Hawaiian shirt, boots, and sporting noticeably hairy arms and chest – all while having the head of his character, Mrs. Doubtfire.

Brosnan imitated Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire voice, recalling Williams saying, “Oh, hello Pierce. Oh, you’re so handsome, oh, give us a kiss.” Then, switching back to his normal voice, Williams officially welcomed Brosnan to the set, mentioning that the GoldenEye star had been in makeup since 3 a.m.

Robin Williams arrived on set around four hours earlier than everyone else, and the makeup team transformed him into Mrs. Doubtfire an incredible 54 times. Because of this, Pierce Brosnan joked that he felt like he never actually worked with Williams, but always with the character of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Matthew Lawrence, who famously played Chris Hillard, had a particularly strange experience with the movie Mrs. Doubtfire – he auditioned for the role when he was just 12 years old.

He recalled feeling a strange but exciting energy when he flew to San Francisco to audition for the part. He said they had him sit on a couch in a small staging area, and then an older British woman unexpectedly sat down beside him, as he told Page Six in 2018.

Only, Lawrence didn’t know that it wasn’t really an elderly British woman.

After she playfully teased the child, his response made everyone laugh, and that’s when Williams stopped acting and became himself.

You know, when Robin Williams was really getting into character for a role, he’d do the most fascinating things. He’d actually go out and wander around the city, still fully in costume, just to live as the character. I remember one time he brought his young co-star along on one of these ‘experimental walks,’ and apparently, nobody even blinked an eye! Everyone just assumed I was his British nanny. It was incredible how completely he committed to becoming someone else.

Brosnan described Williams as loving, joyful, and a beautiful person who was generous and fully engaged with life. He was also very funny and had an infectious energy that lit up any room.

Calling Mrs. Doubtfire a truly joyful movie, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan explained its enduring popularity over the last thirty years, saying it’s a relatable story about the lengths a father will go to for his family, all wrapped up in a fun and theatrical premise.

While Williams wasn’t physically doubled for scenes, Field described him as an extraordinary person. She emphasized that beyond his comedic talent, it was Robin Williams himself who was truly remarkable, according to Yahoo! Entertainment.

He’d often visit her while she was filming in San Francisco, and they would play the newest Legend of Zelda game. It was clear Williams enjoyed it, likely because his daughter is named Zelda Williams.

Williams wasn’t just funny for adults; he also had plenty of kid-friendly humor to share with his young co-stars.

Mara Williams, who started her acting career at age 5 playing Natalie Hillard, shared with TopMob News in 2018 that Robin Williams used to create hand puppets and make them ‘talk like a dog’ using his carpet bag.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Robin Williams transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire – I was honestly a bit scared! But he instantly put me at ease. He said, ‘Don’t be afraid,’ and it was that gentle Scottish accent of his that just made everything okay. From that moment on, I wasn’t scared at all.

Wilson was deeply touched by the movie Mrs. Doubtfire for many years, and so was Lisa Jakub, the actress who played the role of Lydia, his on-screen older sister.

A building manager once freely gave Wilson extra keys, explaining to TopMob that the movie Mrs. Doubtfire had helped her through a tough period in her life.

Jakub recalled in 2018 that people often approached her, sharing deeply personal stories. They would hug her, sometimes cry, and explain how much the movie had helped them cope with their parents’ divorce.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE how amazing Robin Williams was, even to a kid! Jakub told TopMob that when she was only thirteen on set, he actually talked to her about his own struggles with mental health and addiction. She said she was always so thankful he did, because she dealt with anxiety herself, and it meant the world to her that someone so famous was so open and real. It’s just…it proves what everyone knows: he was a truly special person.

Lawrence recalled Williams being the first adult to discuss sensitive topics with him, and he deeply valued Williams’ warning to stay away from drugs, particularly cocaine.

The actor, now 43, remembered a serious conversation he had with a colleague at a 90s Con event in 2022, as reported by People magazine. The colleague asked him if he ever wondered why he seemed so troubled when visiting his trailer. He explained that it was because he’d spent ten years making a big mistake, and was now facing the consequences. He urged the actor to avoid repeating that mistake, and the actor said he heeded that warning and stayed away from whatever it was.

Miranda states her address is 2640 Steiner Street, which is the location of the beautiful Victorian house used as the exterior for the Hillard family home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood.

After the movie Mrs. Doubtfire was released, the house quickly became a popular spot for tourists. Following Robin Williams’ death in 2014, fans continued to visit, leaving flowers, notes, and other keepsakes as tributes.

Typically, the strategy was to provoke Williams and let him react, but the actor confessed to TopMob that he occasionally needed to be controlled.

Williams explained that while the actor often pushed for more filming, it was sometimes necessary to trust the director’s judgment and stop recording. Ultimately, only one take could be used, so there was a limit to how much footage was needed.

Lawrence, however, recalled no one minding having to do dozens of takes.

He explained to Page Six that having Robin Williams on set was incredible. The whole crew would often gather to watch every single take, because Robin never gave a bad performance. They’d film the same scene upwards of 50 times, and each take was unique and excellent.

Well, Williams may have thought only one take per scene could prove useful.

Chris Columbus, the director of the 1999 film Bicentennial Man starring Robin Williams, recently revealed to Business Insider that there are approximately 972 boxes filled with footage of Williams’s improvisations during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire. He’s currently exploring the possibility of creating a documentary using this material.

The filmmaker explained they’re looking for an editor to review a large amount of footage. They want to showcase Robin Williams’ creative process, which they describe as unique and inspiring. There’s a huge archive – about two million feet of film – and they believe there’s potential to create something special with it.
