PlayStation 5 recently received an update that subtly enhances one of its key features. Sony regularly improves the PS5 and PS5 Pro with both downloadable firmware and smaller, automatic updates. These automatic updates often go unnoticed. The latest one quietly improved an important part of the PS5’s user interface, an area that has been heavily focused on over the past year.
The latest PS5 update enhances the Welcome Hub, a feature introduced in 2024. This hub provides a convenient overview of key console information, like storage space, trophy progress, and online friends. It also highlights new PlayStation game announcements and includes customizable backgrounds similar to the themes found on the PS4.
Sony has updated the Welcome Hub on PS5 with a new animated background. It showcases PlayStation’s logos set against a seasonal landscape that will change throughout the year – reflecting Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. If you’d like a more visually engaging and dynamic home screen, this new background is now available.
Along with a new theme for the Welcome Hub, Sony has added a “Recently Played” widget for PS5 users. This widget displays the games you’ve been playing recently, including how long you’ve played and your progress. This information is already available when you select games on the PS5 dashboard, so Sony has just brought it into the Welcome Hub. While it’s not a huge update, it further establishes the Welcome Hub as a central place to quickly see what’s happening on your PS5.
The Welcome Hub has quickly become an essential part of the PS5 experience, and it’s arguably the most significant improvement Sony has made to the system’s menus since 2020. The ongoing addition of new features and visual updates is a great sign, suggesting Sony plans to keep developing and enhancing the Welcome Hub for the foreseeable future.
