The recent announcement that Marvel and DC Comics would team up for crossover events was a big deal, and it’s already produced some excellent comics. Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman was a fun collaboration with a solid story and strong backup features. DC’s Batman/Deadpool is also fantastic. While the main story is stronger thanks to being written by Grant Morrison (compared to Zeb Wells’ work on the Marvel side), both books are enjoyable, and the DC comic includes a backup story that definitively answers the question of who DC’s equivalent of the Sorcerer Supreme is.
When considering who could fill the role of Doctor Strange in the DC Universe, the choice of John Constantine is unexpected, though surprisingly fitting. While Constantine is well-liked, he isn’t the first magician that comes to mind when thinking of DC’s most powerful magic user. However, compared to other magical heroes in the DC Universe, he actually suits the position better than anyone else.
John Constantine Is Always at the Forefront of Magic, Even if It Doesn’t Seem that Way

John Constantine is a leading horror hero in comics, but he’s known for his unconventional methods. Unlike other magic users who focus on learning every spell, Constantine relies on wit and making difficult decisions to defeat dark forces. When considering who could be DC’s top sorcerer, Zatanna and Doctor Fate often seem more likely candidates than Constantine, given their extensive magical abilities.
Both characters are powerful magic users, similar to Doctor Strange. They wield impressive spells, battle evil forces, and have extensive magical knowledge, even sporting distinctive costumes. One of them even has a magical headquarters filled with spellbooks and carries powerful artifacts. They’re frequently caught up in magical conflicts. While both fit the role of DC’s most powerful sorcerer, John Constantine consistently tackles the most challenging tasks.
The Sorcerer Supreme is known as the most powerful magic user and the protector of our world from dangers beyond it, and Constantine fills that role perfectly. Even from his early appearances, like in the classic 1980s DC comic “American Gothic,” he’s been shown gathering allies to fight cosmic-level threats. In Books of Magic, he assembles a team of magical experts, the Trenchcoat Brigade, to make a crucial decision, and villains consistently avoid confronting him directly – a testament to his reputation. Throughout the Hellblazer series and his involvement with Justice League Dark, he’s consistently dealt with otherworldly threats, proving his importance in protecting Earth.
John Constantine is the primary protector of our world, and he leads the charge against magical dangers. While others like Zatanna and Doctor Fate help when they can, they often defer to Constantine when things get serious. He’s the first to learn about new threats and the one who assembles the team to deal with them. Being Sorcerer Supreme isn’t just about power; it’s about leadership, and Constantine embodies that role as the chief defender and leader of those who fight magical battles.
John Constantine Is an Excellent Sorcerer Supreme

Batman/Deadpool #1 is a fantastic comic book. The main story is one of the best I’ve read this year, and the Doctor Strange/John Constantine story is nearly flawless. It cleverly points out the differences in horror approaches between DC and Marvel, playfully suggesting that Marvel’s horror tends to be lighthearted while DC’s is more mature. While this comparison is likely meant as a joke, there’s a grain of truth to it, which makes it a little strange to see John Constantine – a key figure in DC’s darker stories – take on the role of Sorcerer Supreme. But the more you think about it, the more it actually works.
John is an incredibly skilled magic user, completely understanding how magic works in his world. He’s the main defense against dangerous magical creatures that threaten reality itself. He’s quick to detect incoming threats and, when necessary, assembles a team to handle them. These qualities are essential for the Sorcerer Supreme, and John embodies them better than anyone. Though he doesn’t seem like a typical hero, John Constantine is the ideal person to lead when magical problems arise, much like Doctor Strange.
