As a big Valve fan, I was really excited to hear they’re bringing back the Steam Machine! It feels like forever ago, back in the mid-2010s, that they first tried to create a PC specifically for the living room, working with other companies. Sadly, it didn’t really take off then, and they stopped making them pretty quickly. But things are so different now! The PC market has grown a lot, and the success of the Steam Deck proves there’s room for more than just traditional desktops and laptops. It’s a great time to revisit the idea, and honestly, it’s got me hoping maybe, just maybe, we’ll finally get some news about Half-Life 3!
Steam Machine Pricing Rumor Raises Concerns Among Fans
A big question surrounding the Steam Machine is its price. Estimates range from $500 to $800, similar to the cost of a traditional gaming console, but it’s hard to say for sure. When Linus Tech Tips asked Valve directly if it would be priced like a console, the atmosphere reportedly became awkward. However, without video or a clear reading of body language, it’s impossible to know what that reaction meant.
Many people are worried the Steam Machine will be too expensive. Online, fans are saying it’s likely to fail, especially if the price is higher than current gaming consoles. There’s debate about who would even buy it – if it costs more than a console, it won’t appeal to console gamers, and people who already own PCs wouldn’t need it either. This raises questions about whether there’s enough demand for the device at a higher price.

For now, we can only wait to see what Valve announces about the Steam Machine. It’s currently expected to release in early 2026, and pre-orders with pricing details should be available soon. Valve usually sells its hardware directly through Steam, rather than in stores like Best Buy or Target. This approach is helpful because it allows Valve to set realistic expectations and avoid a major flop, even if the Steam Machine ends up being pricey.
