As the fifth and final season of Stranger Things approaches, fans are getting ready for one last adventure in Hawkins. Over the past four seasons, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, have built a complex and fascinating world, mixing 1980s pop culture with elements of scary, otherworldly horror and genuine emotional stories. What started as a search for a missing boy has become a huge story involving different dimensions, hidden government secrets, and a battle to save the world. Each season has expanded the story and raised the tension, leaving viewers with plenty of mysteries and surprising twists.
Season 4 of Stranger Things completely changed the game by introducing Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), who turned out to be the mastermind behind all the trouble. This discovery connected everything – the Mind Flayer, the Demogorgons, and even Will Byers’ disappearance – revealing they all stemmed from the same origin. The season ended with a huge cliffhanger, as the terrifying Upside Down began to directly invade Hawkins, turning the town into a chaotic, supernatural battleground. With the final season on the way, many important questions and storylines remain unanswered, and the creators face the challenge of delivering satisfying conclusions to the mysteries that have captivated audiences for years.
1) What Happened to Max?

Everyone is wondering what will happen to Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) in the final season. At the end of Season 4, Max courageously sacrificed herself to distract Vecna, but the plan backfired. Vecna viciously attacked her, causing severe injuries and leaving her heart stopped for over a minute. Although Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) managed to bring her back to life, Max was left in critical condition.
Two days have passed, and Max is in a coma with severe injuries. What’s even more frightening is that when Eleven searched for her in the Void, she found nothing at all. This suggests that while Max’s body is still functioning, her mind, her sense of self, might be lost – possibly trapped by Vecna. The next season needs to explain what happened to Max and whether she can be saved.
2) Why Did Vecna Kidnap Will in the First Place?

Initially, everyone thought Will Byers was taken by a monster, the Demogorgon, as a random act of violence. But now that we know Vecna is actually in control of the Upside Down, that understanding has changed. The creators of the show have confirmed that Vecna specifically targeted Will, and this will be a major part of the final season’s story.
Since returning from the Upside Down, Will has continued to have a strange mental connection to that dimension and its leader, which has caused him a lot of pain. At the end of Season 4, he feels that familiar, frightening presence again, proving his link to Vecna hasn’t been broken. The biggest question is why Will specifically? Did Vecna recognize a hidden psychic ability in him, making him a good target or even someone Vecna could control? Finding the answer to this is crucial to understanding the show’s overall story.
3) What Exactly Is the Upside Down?

The Upside Down is still the biggest mystery in the show. The kids first called it the “Vale of Shadows” after their Dungeons & Dragons game. It’s a dark, alternate dimension filled with poisonous spores and strange, connected vines, all controlled by Vecna. Season 4 explained that the dimension Eleven sent Henry Creel to wasn’t a copy of Hawkins, but a wild, dangerous place with bizarre creatures and red lightning. It was there, in what’s been called “Dimension X,” that Vecna found a mass of living particles and used his powers to create the Mind Flayer, making it his powerful second-in-command.
The last mystery to solve is how the Upside Down came to be the way it is. As fans know, this alternate dimension is stuck on November 6, 1983 – the day Will Byers disappeared and Eleven first opened a large gateway. The final season needs to clearly explain what happened on that specific day to turn the Upside Down into a dark copy of Hawkins.
4) What’s the Connection Between Clocks and the Upside Down?

A key image from the fourth season of Stranger Things was the Creel family’s grandfather clock. This clock became a terrifying sign of Vecna’s approach, appearing in visions to those he targeted and signaling the time they had left before he attacked.
The clock imagery relates to Henry Creel’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) belief that life’s rules are meaningless and his disdain for the constraints of time. But because the Upside Down seems stuck in a single moment, this connection might be more than just a metaphor. Figuring out what this imagery truly means could be crucial to understanding Vecna’s overall plan.
5) What Happened to Kali, aka 008?

The second season of the show featured a controversial episode, “The Lost Sister,” where Eleven discovered another person who survived the experiments at Hawkins Lab – Kali Prasad, also known as 008. Kali had the ability to create convincing illusions and was leading a group of outsiders in a quest for revenge against those who harmed them at the lab. After spending a short time with Kali, Eleven decided to go back to her friends, and Kali hasn’t appeared or been mentioned in the show since.
Kali’s disappearance left a major plotline from Stranger Things hanging. As the final battle against Vecna approaches with the fate of the world at stake, having another person with powers return would be a huge help. Her special abilities could be exactly what they need to defeat a villain who attacks people’s minds.
6) Who Is Eleven’s Biological Father?

Eleven’s story has always centered around finding a family, and a big mystery has been the identity of her father. We know her mother is Terry Ives, who was involved in a government experiment, and that Dr. Brenner took Eleven as a baby, raising her as his own. A recent official novel revealed that Eleven’s father was Andrew Rich, a young man sent to fight in the Vietnam War. Tragically, Dr. Brenner arranged for him to die before Eleven was born.
As a fan, I’ve always been a little unsure about how much the Stranger Things novels actually connect to what happens in the show – it’s never been clearly stated on screen. Now that we’re heading towards the final season, I really think we need to get a clear answer about who Andrew Rich is, or maybe even a completely unexpected twist, to fully understand Eleven’s backstory and give her story the closure it deserves.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be released in two parts. Volume one will be available on November 26th, with volume two arriving on Christmas Day, and the very last episode premiering on New Year’s Eve.
