Patricia Heaton’s Desperate Audition For Everybody Loves Raymond

During a recent 30th anniversary celebration for the show Everybody Loves Raymond, actress Patricia Heaton shared how much she wanted the part of Debra Barone. Everybody Loves Raymond, a popular sitcom that ran for nine seasons between 1996 and 2005, was nominated for many awards.

Heaton herself won two Emmys for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2000 and 2001.

The actress credits her strong determination to join Ray Romano’s sitcom with helping her achieve success. During the Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion special, she shared how far she went to win the part during her audition.

According to creator Phil Rosenthal, they auditioned around 200 actresses before Patricia Heaton even tried out for the part. He said that when she finally did, she was immediately perfect for the role.

Heaton explained that she had two young children at the time and was anxious to get home so the babysitter wouldn’t have to stay late.

She was thirsty while waiting for her audition and was about to ask a man nearby for help finding water, when she realized it was Romano.

Finally, it was Heaton’s turn to audition. Despite worrying about her children and the babysitter, she was focused on doing well. During the audition with Romano, the script called for a kiss – specifically, “She kisses her husband.” While everyone else just pretended to kiss, Heaton actually kissed Romano.

I was so fascinated to hear that one crucial thing really sealed the deal for Heaton! Apparently, she even confessed to kissing Romano – she was just that eager to land the part. And it wasn’t just desperation, though! Rosenthal also saw during the audition that Heaton and Romano had incredible chemistry together as Raymond and Debra, which must have been amazing to witness.

The main cast of Everybody Loves Raymond was finalized, including Brad Garrett, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and the actors who played the Barone children: Madylin Sweeten, Sawyer Sweeten, and Sullivan Sweeten.

Following the conclusion of Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Heaton appeared in several other television projects, such as The Path to 9/11, Back to You, The Middle (which lasted for nine seasons), and Carol’s Second Act.

However, Everybody Loves Raymond will likely be remembered as the show that truly defined Ray Romano’s career. A special reunion episode aired before the show celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2026.

Over the years, the show lost several cast members, including Roberts, Boyle, and Sawyer Sweeten, which was a great loss for fans. However, their work on Everybody Loves Raymond will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
