Star Trek Star Pitches The Perfect Sci-Fi Crossover That Would Combine Decades Of Deep Lore

Both Star Trek and Doctor Who are incredibly popular science fiction series that have been running for many years, captivating audiences with compelling characters and imaginative stories. While they each have their own unique style and ideas, they share a lot of similarities, which is why they’ve occasionally acknowledged each other through subtle references and ‘Easter eggs’. Most recently, an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds directly mentioned a “time-traveling Doctor,” leading fans to dream of a full-fledged crossover. Now, an actor from Strange New Worlds has shared an idea for making that dream a reality.

Christina Chong, who plays a character on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, has expressed interest in a crossover between Star Trek and Doctor Who. According to TrekMovie, she’d like her Doctor Who character, Lorna Bucket, to be revealed as the same person as her Strange New Worlds character, La’an.

A Star Trek/Doctor Who Crossover Would Be Perfect, But Can It Happen?

If everyone could navigate the necessary approvals, a true crossover between Star Trek and Doctor Who would be fantastic. It wouldn’t feel forced or like a simple gimmick—the two shows share enough common ground that they’d naturally complement each other thematically. The team behind Strange New Worlds has already proven they’re willing to take creative risks with episodes like the musical and the one featuring Jim Henson puppets, so incorporating Doctor Who wouldn’t be a stretch at all.

After five seasons, Strange New Worlds is coming to an end, with the current season already in production. This season will be shorter than previous ones, making a large-scale crossover with Doctor Who on the main show unlikely. However, the creators are considering a sequel series that could delve into unexplored parts of the Star Trek universe, and a Doctor Who crossover might be possible within that spinoff – if it’s developed. This would build on hints and a brief appearance by the TARDIS already seen in Strange New Worlds.

The success of Chong’s idea hinges on approval from studio executives. Following the recent merger of Skydance and Paramount, Star Trek is now a major focus, with a new film already in development by directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Paramount wants to better connect its Star Trek TV shows and movies, so it’s unclear if a crossover with Doctor Who fits their plans. As Strange New Worlds wraps up, Paramount might decide to start fresh, making it easier for new fans to jump in. The upcoming movie from Goldstein and Daley will be a completely original story, separate from previous films.

With the future of Doctor Who currently up in the air – its star Ncuti Gatwa is departing and Disney+ has cancelled it after only two seasons – a crossover with Star Trek isn’t likely to happen soon. Both shows are about to start fresh with new creative teams, and it’s crucial they first establish themselves independently. A crossover wouldn’t be as impactful if either Star Trek or Doctor Who wasn’t successful on its own.
