David Dastmalchian is a remarkably versatile actor who seamlessly moves between major film franchises – one day playing Polka-Dot Man in a DC movie, the next becoming Kurt in Marvel’s Ant-Man. Beyond acting, Dastmalchian is also making a name for himself as a comic book creator, and he’s recently hinted at which of his comic projects he’d be most excited to see brought to life on screen.
Dastmalchian recently told Comicbook that his favorite projects to work on are ‘Count Crowley’ and ‘Knights vs. Samurai,’ mentioning they’re very close in his estimation. He jokingly compared it to a horse race, saying he often thinks about how to make ‘Knights vs. Samurai’ a reality. He envisions it as a unique blend of ‘Shogun,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Dungeons & Dragons,’ and ‘Excalibur.’
As a huge fan of Dastmalchian, it’s no surprise to me that his imagination is always running. He was telling me how excited he is about the possibility of developing projects for TV, and while he’d love to do Count Crowley, he really lit up when talking about Knights vs. Samurai. Honestly, he described such an amazing epic fantasy series – but he also knows it’d be tough to break through all the other high-concept fantasy shows already out there. It sounds incredible, though!
A Passion for Comics and the Big Screen
Anyone who knows actor Michael Dastmalchian won’t be surprised by his passion for bringing comic books to life on screen. He’s been deeply involved in comic book adaptations for years. His original series, Count Crowley (published by Dark Horse Comics), featured Jerry Bartman, a former TV reporter who unexpectedly becomes a defender against supernatural threats. Since it first appeared in 2019, the series has continued with several follow-up stories, including Criminal Macabre/Count Crowley: From the Pit They Came (2022) and Count Crowley: Mediocre Midnight Monster Hunter (2023-2024).
He also mentioned in the interview that he’s not stopping there creatively. He’s collaborating with longtime writing partner Leah Kilpatrick on a book called The Accessories, which focuses on classic monsters and their sidekicks. The story revolves around what happens when all the sidekicks decide to team up on their own, and he thinks it would make a fantastic TV show.
Dastmalchian is creating a graphic novel called Through, which Z2 Comics will publish in 2026. His passion for these projects is contagious, and it’s clear he puts a lot of thought and effort into everything he does.
