I was completely blown away by Sam Elliott’s performance when I first watched 1883. He played Shea, a Civil War veteran leading a wagon train west in search of a better life, and it was a truly compelling and moving story. Elliott was fantastic in the role, and the show was remarkable. So, it was really exciting to hear him discuss that experience and his return to Taylor Sheridan‘s world with Landman.
I was really excited, just like Billy Bob Thornton, when Sam Elliott signed on to Landman. He was fantastic in 1883, and I was thrilled at the thought of him and Thornton working together on this new show coming in 2025. During an interview with both actors, I asked Elliott about joining Season 2 after his role in the Yellowstone prequel. Here’s what he told TopMob about being part of the drama:
It’s physically and emotionally much easier now. Being able to continue working with Taylor’s music, and especially collaborating with this team, is a real gift.

It makes sense that filming Landman has been smoother for Elliott than 1883. Landman doesn’t require the constant travel by horse and wagon that 1883 did, and it’s set in the present day, which naturally simplifies things.
He’s talking about the impressive cast Taylor Sheridan put together for Landman. The show stars Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, and also features Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Andy Garcia, Michelle Randolph, and other well-known actors.
Elliott mentioned Thornton most often when discussing his co-stars, which is fitting since he plays the father of Thornton’s character, Tommy, in the series. Their on-screen relationship as father and son in Landman was also influenced by their past working together, as Elliott explained to me:
It’s really special to finally work with Billy Bob and this cast, especially after knowing him for so long in this industry. We’ve almost worked together a few times, and now I get to play his father and see that relationship develop on screen.

You can watch shows from Taylor Sheridan, like 1883 and Landman, on Paramount+. Subscriptions start at $7.99 a month, or $59.99 a year. A premium plan is also available for $12.99 a month. See the deal here.
It’s interesting that both Sam Elliott and Tim Thornton were in the movie Tombstone back in 1993. Elliott had a significant role in 1883, while Thornton made a brief appearance. They’ve known each other and worked together for years, but their new project, Landman, is unique because their characters have a particularly close relationship.
I get why Elliott and Thornton are so enthusiastic – Thornton even told me he teared up when he learned who would be playing TL! After seeing Tommy and TL’s touching reunion in the second episode of Landman’s second season, I’m really looking forward to seeing more of their scenes together. It’s clear their father-son relationship is strained, and the coming episodes promise to have a significant impact as they reconnect after years apart.
You can now watch new episodes of Landman every Sunday by subscribing to Paramount+, and see Sam Elliott act alongside Billy Bob Thornton and the rest of the cast.
