As a film buff, I’ve noticed WWII stories keep coming – just look at recent films like the Anthony Hopkins one, ‘One Life’. Now we have ‘Desperate Journey‘, which really grabbed me. It’s about two Jewish brothers who are forced to leave their parents behind in Austria as the Nazis take over. The older brother makes it to America, but the younger, Freddie, has to try and reach England on his own. What’s particularly impactful is the film starts with him already a prisoner, on a death march with other Jewish inmates. It immediately makes you realize his journey to England probably isn’t going to end well, and that’s a really powerful way to begin the story.
Before returning to the main story, the film shows Freddie escaping his home and traveling to England, but his plans are interrupted in Paris. There, he finds himself in a nightclub that secretly operates as a brothel, run by a shady character named Christos (Fernando Guallar), who brings in Nazi officers as clients. Freddie’s ability to speak German proves valuable in attracting soldiers to the club. The film alternates between scenes in Paris and a brutal death march, highlighting the stark contrast between the senseless killing of prisoners and the indulgent, immoral behavior of the high-ranking officers.
Freddie works under a false identity, primarily to conceal his Jewish background, so he can earn enough money for a fake passport to escape to England. He also finds himself falling for Jacqueline, a woman with secrets of her own, who works at the club. However, Freddie lives with the constant fear of being discovered, especially because the club’s powerful and suspicious clientele have people quietly disappear – as happens to his landlady. The club itself appears glamorous, but it’s surrounded by poverty and decay.
As a movie fan, I have to say Annabel Jankel, who directed the infamous ‘Super Mario Bros.’ back in ’93, is back after a long break with a much more mature film. The screenplay is by Michael Radford – the guy who made the beautiful ‘Il Postino’ – but honestly, this story feels really familiar. It’s one of those plots we’ve all seen before, and there aren’t any real surprises to be found.
