Disney+ Makes MCU History With Phase 6 Timeline Jump

Disney+ recently marked a significant moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps. This project jumps further ahead in the MCU timeline than anything seen before, even though it’s set in a different, retro-futuristic world. Its arrival represents a turning point for the franchise.

The recent addition of Fantastic Four: First Steps to Disney+ (released November 5th) is a first for the MCU’s complete timeline on the streaming service – it now has a single movie marking both the beginning and end of a complete phase.

With First Steps, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ventured furthest into the future yet. On the opposite end of the timeline, the animated series Eyes of Wakanda explores events from the distant past.

Until recently, shows and movies from two different phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe occupied these top spots, starting with the original Captain America series when it premiered on Disney+. However, the release of Fantastic Four in theaters in July, marking the beginning of Phase 6, has changed things, breaking a long-held pattern for Marvel Studios.

We expect this pattern to keep happening as Marvel releases new projects in Phase 6 and moves into Phase 7, which will begin after Avengers: Secret Wars. This could potentially disrupt the current schedule established for Phase 6.

Every Upcoming Phase 6 Project & Where It Will Sit on the Timeline

Wonder Man

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues into Phase 6 in January with the arrival of Wonder Man on Disney+. Starring Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, the series promises a humorous and satirical take on the world of Hollywood and comic book culture. While mostly self-contained, Wonder Man is expected to take place sometime after other events in the MCU timeline.

The story appears to follow the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as Sir Ben Kingsley reprises his role as Trevor Slattery and is heavily involved.

VisionQuest

The upcoming series VisionQuest, expected to stream next year, is now likely to be released after Wonder Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timeline. This sequel to the popular 2021 Disney+ show WandaVision will focus on Paul Bettany’s character, the super-powered Vision.

Rumors suggest VisionQuest will connect directly to Avengers: Doomsday, but it’s unclear exactly where it fits within the larger Phase 6 plans. It will likely come before the Punisher special and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both of which are designed to lead into the 2026 Avengers movie.

The Punisher Special Presentation

I’m so excited! Jon Bernthal is finally getting his own Punisher show on Disney+ as part of Phase 6. It’s going to be a special, standalone adventure, and apparently, it’s rated R – which is exactly what The Punisher needs. This comes after we see him pop up in the new Daredevil: Born Again series, so it’s a great time to be a fan!

Okay, so with the Punisher officially joining the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and knowing that Brand New Day is shaping up to be the final story piece before the big Avengers: Doomsday event, it seems pretty clear that this Punisher special we’re getting happens before all of that. Basically, it’s setting the stage for what’s to come.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

With only three movies remaining in Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the first. Sources say the story in this new film will directly lead into the events of Doomsday, which explains why Tom Holland’s Peter Parker might not play a significant role in that upcoming movie.

I’m so excited for the new Spider-Man movie! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to connect with the Punisher special presentation, and Jon Bernthal is coming back as Frank Castle. Apparently, his character has gone through some big changes since we last saw him in Daredevil: Born Again, which should be really interesting to see play out.

Avengers: Doomsday

Everything Marvel Studios has been building towards in Phase 6 will come to a head with Avengers: Doomsday. This movie kicks off a two-part Avengers story where Earth’s heroes join forces with characters from different universes to battle the supervillain Doctor Doom.

All the movies and shows in Phase 6 so far are building up to the major event, Doomsday, planned for 2026 (with another movie following in 2027). Therefore, it makes sense that this event will be the culmination of the timeline and appear last when it’s released on Disney+.

Avengers: Secret Wars

The same kind of detailed timeline reasoning used to predict events in Doomsday could also apply to Avengers: Secret Wars. This movie will serve as the Multiverse Saga’s equivalent of Endgame, bringing a major chapter of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling to a powerful close.

It will be fascinating to see what the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline looks like after the upcoming Multiverse Saga finale. There’s been talk that the 2027 movie will largely reboot the Marvel timeline, effectively starting over in many ways – similar to how the Secret Wars storyline did in the comics.
