I’ve been using the next-gen update to the world’s most popular esports gaming mouse, and everything has changed — except for the design

Among the most widely sold gaming mouse series globally is the one from Razer, particularly the DeathAdder lineup, which has gained immense popularity not just among casual gamers but also among professional eSports players.

For almost three years, the Razer DeathAdder V3 Pro, which we evaluated, has been adored by many. However, it’s now time to hand over the crown. The DeathAdder V4 Pro is here, and despite its rather dull appearance, it’s an absolutely amazing mouse.

For a week or two now, I’ve been testing out the latest Razer DeathAdder model, and I’ll be sharing my first impressions soon. Meanwhile, if you were excited about the new DeathAdder and are ready to make a purchase, you can get the Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro for just $169.99 at Razer from today onwards.

What’s actually different with the latest DeathAdder mouse?

Generally, Razer introduces new model numbers for significant design overhauls, yet the DeathAdder V4 Pro appears to be almost indistinguishable from its previous version. Miniscule adjustments and slightly more separated side buttons may not seem thrilling, but the real improvements are found within.

In fact, it’s easier just to give you a list.

  • Razer Focus Pro 45K Optical Sensor Gen-2 — First, the DeathAdder V4 Pro debuts the highest performance sensor Razer has ever made, supporting 45,000 dots-per-inch (up from 30,000), 900 inches-per-second (up from 750), 85 G max acceleration (up from 70 G), and single increment DPI adjustments.
  • Razer Optical Mouse Switches Gen-4 — Razer’s critically acclaimed optical mouse switches have been redesigned from the ground up for the first time since their inception, resulting in superior debounce delay, a longer 100-million clicks life cycle (up from 90 million), and a more responsive and tactile feel.
  • Razer HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 — A third major debut for the DeathAdder V4 Pro, Razer has unveiled a next-generation upgrade for its HyperSpeed Wireless technology, which promises industry-leading latency, stability, and efficiency.
  • Redesigned HyperPolling dongle — The new HyperSpeed Wireless is made possible by the redesigned HyperPolling dongle (included in the box), which features a new spherical shape that is significantly more stable and less prone to moving, and has built-in LED indicators that can be customized to give you at-a-glance information.
  • Razer Optical Scroll Wheel — Razer also created its first optical scroll wheel for the DeathAdder V4 Pro, which offers higher precision and greater reliability, as well as lasting over three times as long as mechanical scroll wheels.
  • Reduced weight and longer battery life — All of this, and the DeathAdder V4 Pro weighs less (56-57g versus 63-64g) and lasts a lot longer on a charge (up to 150 hours versus up to 90 hours).
  • New Razer Synapse features — The DeathAdder V4 Pro boasts new software features, too, including Smart Polling Rate Switching, Dynamic Sensitivity, Mouse Rotation, Smart Tracking, Motion Sync, and more.

Yeah, there’s a lot. But does it really make a difference?

How does it feel to use the new DeathAdder V4 Pro?

The Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro appears quite ordinary on the surface, boasting a straightforward matte black, plastic structure with a comfortable touch finish. However, in actual use, it truly shines.

After getting used to it, the DeathAdder V4 Pro truly excels in all aspects. Its design for comfort, the sensitivity and swiftness of each key, its smooth and lightweight feel, the extraordinary accuracy, and its top-tier functionality are simply unparalleled.

This DeathAdder V4 Pro seems like Razer’s ultimate masterpiece, and I believe it will rule over esports arenas as soon as pros start using it. Frankly, my abilities don’t reach the level required to fully exploit this mouse’s potential.

For a typical competitive gamer, the DeathAdder V4 Pro offers an exceptional gaming experience. In fact, it has surpassed my long-cherished Razer Basilisk V3 Pro in my opinion, despite my preference for the latter’s design and ergonomics (a hint to you, Razer, consider producing a Basilisk V4 Pro with these improvements).

The DeathAdder V4 Pro provides an incredible feel, yet the newly designed HyperSpeed Wireless dongle is worth singling out for its own accolades as well.

A lesser-known improvement is the latest adapter for the DeathAdder V4 Pro. Right out of the box, it boasts a 8,000Hz polling rate, which makes the DeathAdder V4 Pro seem like a more affordable choice compared to the DeathAdder V3 Pro (an upgrade only if you purchase the optional HyperPolling adapter for an additional $10), and this new adapter is significantly superior.

Instead of moving around, it remains stationary for improved connectivity, and its LED indicators prove functional. You can tailor each light to display various details such as battery level, connection strength, polling rate, and other specifics. This feature is quite significant.

As a tech enthusiast, I can’t wait to spend more quality time with the DeathAdder V4 Pro to validate my first impressions after prolonged usage, and to verify if Razer’s claims about its performance, battery life, and stability truly stand up. But rest assured, this mouse is shaping up to be a surefire hit for gamers.

The Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro is rolling out for $169.99 at Razer starting today.
