The fifth episode of Pluribus begins by showing what happens after Carol’s actions at the end of episode four, focusing on how the infected try to defend themselves. However, right before the episode ends, a shocking cliffhanger reveals Carol discovering something frightening inside a shop’s freezer.
In the Apple TV sci-fi series, Carol continues her quest for answers, trying to understand the hive mind and find a way to cure the infection. Surprisingly, she views Zosia’s near-death experience as progress in her research and attempts to share her discoveries with other survivors. However, before the episode concludes, Carol uncovers something frightening that the infected humans have been concealing.
What Carol Found In The Store’s Cold Storage In Pluribus Episode 5’s Ending
Carol discovered a peculiar QR code on a food item she’d purchased. When she scanned it, expecting information about the product, it didn’t work. Curious, she began checking other food packages in her home, and eventually found a similar code on a bag of dog food. This time, she scanned it to find out where the dog food was made.
In the episode’s final scenes, she arrives at the factory where the food is made, hoping the QR code will give her clues. Her investigation leads her to the store’s freezer, and she discovers something disturbing. Her frightened reaction strongly suggests that the infected are using the freezer to hide bodies, and that’s likely what Carol found.
As a huge movie fan, this new detail really got me thinking – could it connect to what those infected people are actually getting from the milk they’re drinking? It feels like a crucial piece of the puzzle, and I’m eager to see how it all unfolds.
What The “Afflicted” People Are Drinking From Milk Cartons
Carol found a lot of milk cartons jammed in her garbage disposal, which made her suspect the aliens were eating or drinking something. A visit to the local dairy revealed they weren’t making milk anymore – they were producing a weird, yellow, oily substance and packaging it in milk cartons.
She shares her findings in a video for others with compromised immune systems, noting the liquid is odorless. If Carol discovers human bodies in the factory’s cold storage, it’s possible the infected are using the deceased as a source of energy. The liquid she found may have been created by processing these bodies.
Because the infected prioritize efficiency and were told to avoid food in the store, it seems they’re using the bodies of the dead to stay alive – essentially as a food source. If this is true, it would be a terrifying development, similar to ‘War of the Worlds,’ showing the infected are cannibals and will do whatever it takes to survive.
As Carol enters the store, the camera repeatedly draws attention to posters about “reuse.” This might be a subtle suggestion that the infected are somehow “reusing” people as a source of food.
Are Other Immune Individuals Getting Carol’s Recorded Messages?
Okay, so Carol’s really starting to feel like she’s talking to a wall. She’s reaching out to others who haven’t gotten sick, but getting absolutely no replies, which makes her question if her messages are even going through. It’s weird, because the people who are infected have been surprisingly cooperative so far. That makes her think they aren’t actively blocking her, but rather, they’re probably forwarding her messages to other ‘survivors’… who are pointedly choosing to ignore her. It’s clear her past actions have really burned some bridges, and people aren’t willing to forgive and forget.
In the fourth episode of Pluribus, the man from Paraguay showed a similar dislike for the infected as Carol did. He clearly avoided them and might respond to her messages when he receives them. If they connect, they could potentially work together to find a cure for the pandemic.
Why The “Afflicted” Abandoned Carol After Pluribus Episode 4
Carol, whom the affected individuals seem devoted to, receives extraordinary generosity from them – they’d even give her a dangerous weapon at her playful request, claiming they’d fulfill even more extreme demands. However, she pushes their willingness to please, ultimately forcing Zosia to reveal the truth about reversing the pandemic at the end of episode 4.
Those infected become desperate when they realize Carol is getting closer to uncovering the truth. Fearing she could expose them or even find a way to cure the infection, they start avoiding direct contact with her. While they continue to meet her requests, they only do so through drones, as seen in episode 5 of Pluribus.
