Be warned, major spoilers follow for The Mighty Nein episode 4! The creators and cast of The Mighty Nein explain why the animated series made a significant change from the original Critical Role campaign: the death of an important character. Following the tragic events at the carnival in episode 3, the main characters finally come together in episode 4 and begin searching for Toya, an elf who was part of the carnival.
When the heroes of The Mighty Nein found her, they discovered she was possessed by the Devil-Toad, who claimed it was the only thing keeping her alive. Though Nott and Jester managed to free her from the possession, Toya ultimately died. This loss brought the group closer together. Interestingly, in the original Critical Role game, Toya survives.
In a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, Tasha Huo, the showrunner for The Mighty Nein, discussed how the shared experience of Toya’s death helped the group bond. She explained that although they weren’t a cohesive team yet, this event marked the beginning of their journey toward becoming one.
I was really affected by Toya’s death in episode 4, and I’m curious about the decision to make that change this season. Could you talk about the creative process and the reasoning behind it?
For me, it was crucial that the Mighty Nein, who weren’t really a team yet, had a shared experience to bond over. As Molly points out, this event gave them a common trauma, and that’s what initially started to bring them together. They weren’t a team yet, but going through something so sad, difficult, and traumatic together was a key step in their journey towards becoming one. That shared experience was really important to me as a writer.
ScreenRant: It also keeps you on your toes as a viewer.
Tasha Huo: Yeah, nobody’s safe.
Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien, and Matt Mercer, who play Nott, Caleb, and Essek respectively, also discussed how death is used in both versions of the story. They explained that Toya’s death increases the tension, but also shows how the series can make changes to the original while still remaining faithful to the core story and characters.
Please be warned, this contains a spoiler! I was really shocked by Toya’s death and would be interested to hear about the creative decision-making process behind that change for this show.
We definitely wanted to raise the stakes in the show, and that meant showing that characters could really die. It’s a way to make the story feel impactful and show the audience that the dangers are real. We even considered killing off a young character, like Moana, to emphasize that point.
Liam O’Brien describes the Mighty Nein as a group of individuals who are all quite isolated and dealing with significant personal struggles. He believes that the weight of these struggles can be a powerful motivator for them to overcome their challenges and make positive choices, suggesting that high personal cost can drive them to do the right thing.
The group’s first real mission as a team is a bittersweet success – they win, but not without losses, and that fits perfectly with the story’s overall message. What’s great about adapting the original campaign into animation is the chance to revisit the source material and ask, ‘How can we make this even better?’ We really felt we improved upon the story and strengthened its themes with this particular change. It allows us to build on the original, improvised narrative and deliver a more impactful experience.
Liam O’Brien: It’s really rainbows and sunshine the back half. [Laughs]
The Mighty Nein had already altered Toya’s character from the original campaign, changing her race from a dwarf to an elf. However, killing her off ultimately served a more significant narrative purpose: it created a shared failure for the group, uniting them and launching their adventure.
This development also increases the drama and unpredictability of the story, promising lots of unexpected turns for The Mighty Nein. The creator, Huo, isn’t hesitant to deviate from the original campaign to keep viewers engaged, especially those who already know it. However, these changes will only be made if they ultimately benefit the series as a whole.
Now that Toya is gone, marking the middle of The Mighty Nein story, the show is really starting to focus on the heroes becoming the tight-knit team we know they can be. While we can expect more unexpected events, this shift in focus seems like it will be worth it as the story continues to unfold.
New episodes of The Mighty Nein arrive Wednesdays on Prime Video.
