Josh O’Connor argues that Daniel Craig with his “self-doubt and self-loathing” is nothing like James Bond

The latest installment in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise, Wake Up Dead Man, is now playing in theaters. Daniel Craig returns as the beloved detective Benoit Blanc.

Craig has become well-known for his role as a detective, successfully moving past being strongly identified with James Bond, a character he retired from in 2021 with the film No Time to Die.

According to Josh O’Connor, who acted alongside Daniel Craig in Wake Up Dead Man, Craig isn’t much like James Bond in real life. O’Connor shares this insight in the next issue of TopMob magazine, which comes out on Saturday, November 29th.

In a recent interview, O’Connor explained that Craig was instrumental in him landing the part of young priest Jud Duplenticy in the new movie.

O’Connor described Daniel as a remarkably kind person. He praised Daniel’s generosity and explained that Daniel was instrumental in getting her cast in ‘Knives Out,’ having brought her work to the attention of director Rian Johnson.

“I didn’t know that until yesterday, actually, and it’s a big deal.”

He went on to say that Daniel is a truly skilled actor. We often overlook this, perhaps because he’s so well-known for playing James Bond, but his range is remarkable. He’s capable of convincingly portraying a wide variety of emotions and genres, including tragedy, comedy, and intense drama.

He’s a true collaborator, always seeking input and genuinely open to ideas. He often questions himself and his work, frequently asking for my opinion and wondering if he’s making the right choices. He’s very humble and isn’t afraid to admit when he’s unsure.

When someone suggested that terms like “self-doubt” and “self-loathing” didn’t seem to fit with James Bond actor Daniel Craig, O’Connor explained that’s understandable. He pointed out that Craig portrays Bond with such confidence, it’s surprising to think about those feelings behind the character.

That doesn’t really capture who he is. He’s genuinely sweet and a little insecure, almost boyish, but incredibly charismatic and draws people in. He’s also very intelligent, and I really enjoyed working with him.

In “Wake Up Dead Man,” featuring Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, and many other stars, detective Blanc investigates the mysterious death of a beloved priest named Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, a case that appears unsolvable.

I have to say, the buzz around this movie is incredibly positive! Right now, it’s sitting at a fantastic 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. To give you some context, Knives Out scored a brilliant 97%, and the sequel, Glass Onion, wasn’t far behind at 91%. So, it’s in seriously good company!
