OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is a clear leader in artificial intelligence, but it also wants to start making its own hardware. This plan has been underway for some time, especially after they brought on Jony Ive, Apple’s former head of design, to lead their hardware team.
The company also bought Ive’s device startup for $6.5 billion, strengthening its work in this area. This puts OpenAI in a strong position to succeed in the hardware market, though specific details about the device they’re developing are still scarce.
We’ve had glimpses of a new device from OpenAI, with CEO Sam Altman mentioning they’re working on a small range of devices designed to change how we interact with computers. However, Altman also said that limited computing power for ChatGPT is slowing down the device’s development.
I recently read another report explaining the reasons for the delay of this AI device – it won’t be arriving before 2026, and likely even later. Apparently, they’re running into challenges with privacy concerns, the amount of computing power needed, and getting the AI’s personality just right. Sam Altman even said, quite directly, “Don’t expect anything very soon.”
Recent reports from The Verge indicate that OpenAI is actively developing its much-anticipated AI device. During a conversation with Laurene Powell Jobs at Emerson Collective’s 2025 Demo Day, Jony Ive shared that a prototype is currently being tested, with plans to release the device within the next two years.
Sam Altman has repeatedly said that current AI systems aren’t built to succeed in a future dominated by artificial intelligence, making ambitious goals like achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) harder for OpenAI. Because of this, it’s likely OpenAI is working on a new product designed to overcome these limitations.
According to Sam Altman, the device will be smaller than a smartphone and designed to be simple, attractive, and fun to use.
According to Ive:
I’m drawn to solutions that seem remarkably simple, and I also appreciate beautifully designed, complex products that are inviting and easy to use. Ideally, these tools should feel so intuitive that you can use them effortlessly, almost without even thinking.
Sam Altman and Jony Ive believe their new device will be a hit with people, and could be as revolutionary as the original iPhone was back in 2007.
