The new Doctor Who series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, could be the first of several spin-offs designed to broaden the Doctor Who universe. While spin-offs were common when Russell T. Davies previously led the show (2005-2010), they largely stopped during the tenures of Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. With Davies returning as showrunner, the possibility of more spin-offs is back, and The War Between the Land and the Sea could be the start of a new wave of development.
We’ve seen Doctor Who related shows before, like Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. But the new series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be the first true Doctor Who spinoff in nearly ten years. It stars Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, and others as UNIT battles to prevent a worldwide conflict caused by the return of the Sea Devils. If this series does well, it could lead to more Doctor Who spinoffs, and there are many exciting ideas for what those could be.
7) Torchwood Revival

Premiering in 2006, Torchwood was the first spin-off series from Doctor Who and remains one of the most popular. Airing later in the evening, it tackled more grown-up and realistic issues, following the Torchwood team in Cardiff – led by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) – as they investigated alien creatures and objects that appeared through a tear in time and space. With Russell Davies returning to Doctor Who, many fans hope Torchwood will be brought back, though a revival likely wouldn’t include Barrowman due to recent misconduct allegations. Bringing back Torchwood could attract adult viewers back to the Doctor Who universe.
6) UNIT Case-of-the-Week Series

The new audio drama, The War Between the Land and the Sea, returns to UNIT headquarters in London, where Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and her team are trying to prevent a worldwide conflict. This story could be the start of a fantastic Doctor Who spinoff focused entirely on UNIT. We’ve seen former companions like Mel, Ace, Tegan, and Donna working with UNIT before, and a series of standalone UNIT investigations would be a great way to bring back even more beloved characters from the show’s past.
5) The Paternoster Gang

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Paternoster Gang – the Victorian London detective trio – on screen, last appearing in 2014 with Peter Capaldi’s first episode as the Doctor. This unique group – consisting of Silurian Madame Vastra, human Jenny Flint, and Sontaran Strax – always delivered action, humor, and wonderfully strange adventures, and fans are eager for more. While they’ve continued in novels and audio dramas, a dedicated spinoff series would be fantastic, potentially adding new layers to the Doctor Who universe.
4) River Song’s Adventures

The relationship between the Doctor and River Song (Alex Kingston) is one of the most captivating and well-done stories in Doctor Who history. As fellow time travelers, their paths constantly crossed out of order, creating an epic love story. However, River Song has had many adventures we haven’t seen. A spin-off series starring River would bring Alex Kingston back to the Doctor Who universe for the first time since 2015, and allow her to explore stories independent of the Doctor.
3) Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor Series

The surprising discovery that the Doctor wasn’t originally from Gallifrey – but is actually the Timeless Child, a being from another universe with the ability to regenerate endlessly – allowed for the introduction of many previously unknown Doctors. Jo Martin was widely praised for her portrayal of the Fugitive Doctor, an earlier version of the Doctor than previously known. A spinoff series focusing on the Fugitive Doctor, or other unseen incarnations of the Doctor, would be a great way to expand the Doctor Who universe with more Doctor-focused stories, and to further explore the history and mythology of the Time Lords.
2) Doctor Who’s What If

Marvel’s What If…? showed us alternate versions of familiar stories, and Doctor Who could do something similar. Considering the show already establishes the existence of parallel universes, a What If…?style series would be a great fit. The 2008 episode “Turn Left” brilliantly explored a dark timeline where the Doctor died earlier, and a series like this could revisit moments like that and others. It would also be a fantastic way to bring back beloved past actors and remind viewers of classic Doctor Who* adventures.
1) Eighth Doctor Series

Fans have long hoped for a spin-off series focusing on the Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann. McGann briefly played the Doctor in a 1996 TV movie intended to bring the show back after it was cancelled in 1989, but a full series never materialized. Though he returned in a short online episode in 2013 and has continued the role through audio dramas, many viewers would love to see him star in a dedicated series. This would allow for a deeper exploration of the Time War era and give more development to his companions, like Grace Holloway, Charley, Destrii, Lucie, and Sam. An Eighth Doctor series could be an exciting addition to the Doctor Who universe and attract new fans.
