10 Years Later, Fast & Furious 7’s Original Ending Before Paul Walker’s Death Has Been Revealed

The Fast & Furious series was deeply impacted by the tragic death of Paul Walker in a car accident on November 30, 2013. Though the accident wasn’t connected to filmmaking, Walker hadn’t finished his work on Furious 7. The film’s release was delayed so the story could be completed and a respectful tribute to Walker could be included. Furious 7 eventually premiered in 2015, and after a decade, the film’s original ending has now been made public.

I just finished reading Barry Hertz’s book about the Fast & Furious saga, Welcome To the Family, and it blew my mind! Apparently, the original plan for Furious 7 wasn’t what we saw in theaters. They were actually going to have Dom, Brian, and the whole team destroy God’s Eye completely, rather than just give it to the authorities. It would have been a much more definitive ending for that chapter, but it would have also meant a totally different path for the franchise moving forward!

The original ending of Furious 7 featured the team celebrating their successful mission at Neptune’s Net, the same restaurant where Brian and Dom first connected in the original film. After receiving awards from Kurt Russell’s character, Mr. Nobody, Dom would have destroyed the recovered device, known as “God’s Eye,” believing it was too dangerous for anyone to control. The team would then drive off, with Dom discarding the award as a symbol of their freedom. A deleted scene also involved the team throwing a knife at a map to playfully decide where they’d go next.

Fast & Furious Would Have Been a Much Different Franchise With the Original Ending

The final version of Furious 7 differs from what was originally planned. Instead of gathering at Neptune’s Net or destroying the God’s Eye device, the movie shows Brian happily retiring to be with his wife, Mia, and their family. The film ends with Dom driving away, Brian briefly joining him, and the two sharing a poignant farewell before going their separate ways. After Paul Walker’s tragic death, the filmmakers cleverly used his brothers, Caleb and Cody, along with existing footage and digital technology to complete his scenes, seamlessly integrating their appearances with Walker’s own.

The ending of Furious 7 is often praised as a touching tribute to Paul Walker, gracefully wrapping up his character’s story. However, the filmmakers originally planned a different ending that would have significantly impacted the future of the Fast & Furious franchise. Had the God’s Eye device been destroyed in Furious 7, it wouldn’t have reappeared in later films like The Fate of the Furious and Fast X. This also suggests the direction of Dom and the team’s adventures would have been quite different. Although the original ending likely would have been satisfying, the ending they ultimately created after Walker’s passing proved to be just as powerful and meaningful – a remarkable outcome considering the circumstances.
