In the fourth season of Stranger Things, Max Mayfield becomes the target of Vecna, the terrifying ruler of the Upside Down. This leads to a memorable scene where Max uses Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill” to fight Vecna’s control, but ultimately, she sacrifices herself to save her friends. Vecna fatally wounds Max in the season finale when she intentionally puts herself in danger as a distraction.
Despite being declared dead for a full minute, Eleven was able to use her powers to bring Max back. However, Max suffered severe injuries, including broken bones and blindness, and remains in a coma at the Hawkins hospital. The town is currently under military quarantine. While there’s been no indication that Max will wake up, Henry Creel – revealed to be Vecna – now knows the truth about her condition and whether a full recovery is possible.
Where Did Max Go When She Was Resurrected?
Henry, disguised as Mr. Whatsit, tricks Holly into entering one of his memories, leading her to the Creel house. Believing Mr. Whatsit is a friend, Holly is warned to stay away from the woods while he claims to be rescuing other children from monsters. But then, Holly receives a letter—signed by Henry—telling her to meet him at caves located in those same woods.
Holly’s journey leads her to Max, who appears worn and troubled. Max quickly becomes Holly’s friend and brings her back to her cave, where she shares her story. Afterwards, Max finds herself experiencing memories belonging to Henry. These memories begin at Hawkins Laboratory, immediately following the devastating event where nearly all the test subjects were killed – everyone except Eleven. The next memory takes her to Hawkins High School in 1969, when Joyce Byers, Steve Harrington’s father, and Henry Creel were all students. Interestingly, Henry was performing in a school play that Joyce was promoting by handing out flyers.
I was completely gripped watching Max trapped inside Henry’s head, haunted by his childhood and everything that happened at Hawkins Lab. It felt like there was no way out for her, until she remembered the music! That song, playing through Lucas’s boombox, became her lifeline, a potential escape route from Vecna’s grip. For a moment, she saw it – a portal back to reality, to the hospital room. But just when she was about to break free, the tape snapped! It was agonizing to watch the portal close right when she was so close to getting out.
Vecna pursued her into this memory, intending to trap all his young victims here and use them to obliterate the real world, blending it with the Upside Down. Her only refuge was a cave she’d chosen as a safe place, because Henry—Vecna—wouldn’t enter it. The cave seems to represent a painful memory for Henry, perhaps because he once hid there as a child to avoid someone or something—possibly a bully or a creature from the Upside Down.
How Holly Gives Max Another Chance at Life
Max had resigned herself to the idea that Holly would always be trapped as a memory within Henry’s mind, believing it was the only way to protect her – and the world – from Vecna. But Holly’s presence has given Max a renewed sense of hope that they can both find a way out if they cooperate. Max tells Holly she has a plan, but it will only work if Henry remains unaware of their connection.
I’m still a little in the dark about exactly what Max is planning, and the movie smartly keeps that under wraps for now. But honestly, after seeing how thoroughly she’s explored Henry’s mind – practically living inside his memories – I wouldn’t be shocked if she already has a clear path back to reality. She’s been everywhere, seen everything, and I suspect she’s holding all the cards.
As of the end of Season 5, Episode 4, Max faces a new problem: Vecna has kidnapped Holly and several other children he’s targeted before, exploiting their vulnerabilities. Max might need to step up and become a protector, like Steve, to gather these kids and keep them safe. However, the large number of victims Vecna has captured could actually help Max – with Holly working alongside her, without Henry knowing, all the children might be able to team up and defeat him, or at least escape his grasp.
As seen in Stranger Things, having a determined group of kids is useful, but the key to defeating Vecna within his mind might be a specific location: the cave. Vecna gains power by tormenting people with their worst memories. It would be fitting if Max could trap him in one of his own painful memories, potentially saving her life in the process.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is available to watch on Netflix now. The second part will be released on December 25th, and the very last episodes of the series will premiere on December 31st.
