Ahsoka Disney+ Villain Explains the Real Reason They Won’t Return In Season 2

An actor from the Disney+ series Ahsoka has explained why they won’t be reprising their villainous character in the show’s second season. Ahsoka is a live-action continuation of the popular animated Star Wars series The Clone Wars and Rebels, starring Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. The show follows Ahsoka’s attempt to prevent the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen), who received assistance from another character while stranded on Peridea.

In the final season of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger sent Grand Admiral Thrawn far into space. Following this, Ahsoka and Sabine tracked Thrawn down to the distant planet of Peridea. While stranded there, Thrawn was secretly working with the Nightsisters and Dathomiri Great Mothers to plan his comeback. Actress Claudia Black has confirmed that one of the Nightsisters, Klathow, will not appear in the second season of Ahsoka.

Jana Black, who played Great Mother Klathow in three episodes of Ahsoka Season 1, has confirmed she won’t be returning for Season 2, even though the show had plans for her character. She told Bleeding Cool the decision came down to finances, explaining that Disney is handling things differently now and she couldn’t afford the move from Los Angeles to London where Season 2 was filmed.

Claudia Black explained that while the show was renewed for a second season and she was initially brought back, Disney couldn’t meet her financial needs. As a single mother living in Los Angeles, the cost of living while production moved to London was simply too high, forcing her to leave the show.

Black described leaving her role in Star Wars as “very sad,” and she fondly remembered the creative and fun atmosphere on set.

I was really moved by the experience. I emailed Dave Filoni to express my gratitude, telling him it had been an incredible journey. Like many who came of age in the 70s and 80s, I’ve always loved Star Wars, and working on it was a lot of fun.

Actress Claudia Black, famous for her roles in sci-fi shows like Farscape and Stargate SG1 (and the upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur), joining the Star Wars universe thrilled many fans. It’s disappointing to hear she may not return for Season 2. Whether her character, Klathow, was intended to have a significant role in the new season could explain if she’s been replaced.

Season 2 of Ahsoka will feature returning cast members Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera, and Davide Tennant as Huyang, alongside new additions Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati and Rory McCann, who will take over the role of Baylan Skoll following the passing of Ray Stevenson. The series is slated to return on Disney+ in 2026.

What’s Next for the Nightsisters in Ahsoka Season 2?

In the first season of Ahsoka, Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and the Nightsisters were major adversaries for Ahsoka Tano. Their conflict began in Season 2 of The Mandalorian and came to a head in the season finale of Ahsoka, where Ahsoka defeated Elsbeth. This victory upset the Great Mothers, who were traveling with Thrawn.

Even though Elsbeth died, the Great Mothers managed to escape with Thrawn and were last seen arriving on Dathomir. This suggests that Season 2 of Ahsoka will begin with Thrawn on Dathomir, the planet of the Nightsisters, and will probably explore the history and secrets of this powerful group of witches.

Dathomir is a planet that’s appeared in Star Wars content before, like the animated series The Clone Wars and the video game Jedi: Fallen Order. But the upcoming second season of Ahsoka will be the first time we see it in live-action, which is really exciting for fans. While the character of Black as the Great Mother Klathow won’t be in this season, the show seems likely to continue featuring the Nightsisters in future episodes.
