EastEnders is preparing a difficult storyline for Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf), who will be diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump.
We learned earlier this month that this character will be returning for a short appearance, and she’ll be back on television in just a few weeks.
As she deals with past conflicts involving Zoe Slater and Vicki Fowler, the Mitchell family member is secretly worried about her health, and her actions become increasingly erratic.
Jack Branning, Denise Fox, and Phil Mitchell all encourage her to see a doctor, and the tests confirm their fears.
Thankfully, because her condition was detected early, doctors expect a complete recovery after she has a lumpectomy early next year.

Over the holidays, the show will focus on Sam as she deals with the grief of losing her mother, Peggy (played by Barbara Windsor), to illness in 2016, and worries about the future.
This soap is a collaboration with Breast Cancer Now and medical professionals to raise awareness about the importance of regularly checking for breast changes and seeking early medical advice if anything unusual is noticed.
Ben Wadey, the show’s Executive Producer, explained that it was crucial to collaborate with Breast Cancer Now to make sure Sam’s storyline about breast cancer was handled with sensitivity and accuracy.
When Sam discovered a lump in her breast, she was reluctant to see a doctor. However, with encouragement from her loved ones, she sought medical attention promptly. Fortunately, her cancer was detected early, and she was able to have it successfully removed with a lumpectomy shortly after the new year.

Sally Kum from Breast Cancer Now explained that Sam’s story will likely connect with many who watch EastEnders. The charity shared its knowledge and experience in supporting people with breast cancer to help make the storyline realistic and true to life.
As a passionate supporter of breast cancer research, I truly believe early detection is key. The sooner we can find it, the better the treatment options are, and the more lives we can save. It’s that simple – early diagnosis makes all the difference.
EastEnders is helping to spread an important health message: regularly checking your breasts, being aware of potential breast cancer signs, and seeing a doctor about any new or unusual changes are all crucial for early detection.
